Spain. Official definition of Parking (as opposed to camping)

The essential part is shown below:-

“Essentially, the DGT has no problem with motorhomes stopping on public roads or in car parks once they don’t take up any additional space or create any noise. In this way, they are treated by the traffic authorities exactly the same as cars and other vehicles.

As of July 11 2023, the DGT accepts that parking is not camping. Motorhomes are free to park like any car under these requirements (PROT Instruction 2023/14):

  • If the vehicle, with the engine stopped, is only in contact with the ground through the wheels (the stabilising legs or any other devices are not used, except for the chocks, provided for by the Traffic Regulations).
  • The vehicle does not occupy more surface area than it does when closed, that is, without the deployment of projectable elements, chairs, tables, etc.”
Me again. So no reference to anything that you wish to do within your vehicle. Just don’t open any side windows as this increases surface area. Open roof lights only. Place any portable solar panels on the roof making allowance of course for the how comfortable you feel and how likely a sharp exit might be required.

Assuming you are in a recognised official parking zone, it may be useful to have a copy of this directive in your van in case the Spanish police take more than a passing interest.

U.K. government and local councils please take note of the sensible and clear directive of the Spanish government. And of course the fact that local authorities or Juntas in Spain make service point provisions for motorhomes.
