Stopped over at Soutra Aisle poi and found this fly tipping.

Over 70 tyres
Two suites
Two settees
Fridge freezer
Bath
Mattress

And much more.

This is on the car park of an ancient monument of historical interest both religious and medical, near to Galashiels. Please Google Soutra Aisle to find out more.

If any of our Scottish members would care to write to the appropriate body about this appalling mess, they would be doing all a great service.
We will write ourselves upon our return home.
Such a shame that something of such historical importance is treated so badly.

Had it not been so late in the day we would have moved on. We only gained access by moving the suite, mattress and numerous tyres, most of which is hidden in the under growth which is actually part of the car park.
Believe me, there is a lot more dumped than in the photographs.

Shocking I know, but I always report fly tipping to my local council via their website. To be fair, they usually collect it within 10 days. I have even done same when outside my own area.

Unfortunately the rubbish appears to have been there quite some time. Under all the grass and nettles that you see is actually hardstanding. I estimate 30 or so cars could park within the area once it was cleared.
The tyres are obviously from a tyre business, if found they should get a maximum fine and imprisonment IMHO.
Some body or other has taken the time and expense to erect many story boards around the monument and the grass is kept short, just a pity the same care isn't taken with the car park. The alternative is to park on the narrow road, effectively blocking it.
Perhaps the council will do s something once someone is killed?

It could be a lovely place but has unfortunately always been a fly tipping hotspot. If it’s not council property it’s down to the landowners to remove the rubbish. Someone dumped asbestos roof panels in a lay-by not far from me and it cost the landowner a lot to get it removed.

They would have to travel a few miles to get there to do that .
Reluctantly accompanied my parents when the chapel was re consecrated (or whatever they do) about 60 years ago .
My old man would have had an Annie rooney if he saw that

I blame the motorhomers, especially those with the 6 tyre versions, because they are big enough to accommodate those sofas that are dumped alongside the tyres...

Signed

It’s appalling and unforgivable behaviour tbh, but certainly around our way the council don’t help.

The rules and restrictions on using the council tips are arduous at best, the days vary and the hours are short, and even on the days they are advertised as open they aren’t always so.

Then someone like me with a 4x4 s.w.b. Commercial can’t use the normal hours and has to buy a permit to dispose of an armchair, so if you work 9-5 and use a small van for personal use you pretty much can’t access the council recycling depot without taking time off work, buying a permit and booking an appointment, then they inspect the waste and decide if you can put it in a bin.

Can’t even take the motorhome as it’s over 3.5t g.v.w.

None of this is an excuse for fly tipping, but you have to wonder if councils don’t contribute to thier own problem.

What do you expect from a third world country such as the UK - just compare us to somewhere like Singapore - here there is no real deterrent and this is why the UK has become the laughing stock of the world.........

Totally agree with you Kev. The cost of getting rid of builders rubbish is very expensive when you take into consideration the weights being dumped.
I would still like to kneecap fly tippers though.

The other thing I've noticed is that, in some sites the workers don't appear to be doing an awful lot of work, being content watching members of the public struggle to unload their cars and lift heavy items to chest height to throw the stuff in the skips.

Some tips in NZ have on site 'shops' where you can buy other people's rubbish. At one site we visited there were enough double glazed 6' tall windows, timber, Kingspan and roofing sheets to build a large garden office/summerhouse, whatever. The cost for the lot was around 500 dollars or £250.

We regularly bought books and equipment for the camper.
If we were living there I would have spent a fair whack of money just buying stuff to recycle!

Fair point trevexess.
