Southwold to ban motorhomes

Apparently Southwold beach huts are the most expensive in the UK - can't find a prive at the mo' but perhaps some-one else could? I know that they are stupid money

Southwold

Baconsdozen, thanks for bringing this to our attention.

On reading the article - At a meeting of Southwold's policy and finance committee, chairman Michael Ladd said: “We consider this to be a growing problem and it could get worse if we don't tackle it now.”

Having just done a quick search of the internet I found this email address as a general one for Michael Ladd, southwold.tc@virgin.net at southwold council and this for the chief executive of Waveney Council stephenbaker@waveney.gov.uk

Can I suggest that if you want support that we follow the example of 'Belgian' and a standard text is produced which we can all support and email. I would like to see the inclusion of setting up an aire in the text!

Unlike Aldeburgh and Poole where 'we' did NOT block anyones view, I can see their point, you don't spend hundreds of thousands on a property with a sea view to have a big white box park in front of it and block the view!

I have never parked in front of any house and I doubt if many of the users of this site would, even at Hunstanton I've tried to park opposite the many side roads that joint the cliff top road and always move off to somewhere less obtrusive for the night.

Again like Aldeburgh I doubt if 'fighting' it will work, so the best thing is to vote with your feet... or should that be wheels and spend your money elsewhere!!

i wish that was all i had to worry about a few motorhomes parked at night leaving no mess and doing no harm whatsoever the sad b@~:{@:s

That's how it is now days..If you are having fun, a good time , enjoying yourself in what ever you do , you can guarantee some one is going to ban it.
It's deemed totally un acceptable to enjoy your self these days...without some moron trying to ban it.

The problems with places like Aldbrough and Southwold is that they are both pleasant and picturesque: Because of this, people who have very considerable sums of money like to have third or fourth homes there.
As long as the local peasants keep tugging their forelocks to them they will be allowed to live there.
The point is that ultimately, because of the influx of money, what they came to enjoy is destroyed
Croyde in North Devon is a good case in point. The average house there is now in excess of £250k. Needless to say, B&Q&Q, Sainsburys and local farms do not pay the level of wages to support a mortgage of that size.
The result is that the place is like a ghost town in the winter. Southwold is the same and Aldbrough is not much better.

the way i see it is if i want to park my white box anywhare i want within reason then why carnt i. after all i park on the queens highway my white box is taxed and tested fully insured and the public highway is what it says public . just because some pathetic person wants a uninterupted veiw out of there front window then tough i live in a house that has a drive and parking on the road in front but there is no law that states joe public cannot park his vehicle out side my house as long as he is not restricting entrance to my drive , so to me park as and where you want as long as it is legal ie no yellow lines and as for banning a motor home it is a motor vehicle as is a mini as for an uninterrupted veiw if thats what they want build a house on top of ben nevis and dont make property prices go sky high for the people that were born and raised in the area there are two many second home owners about that make life impossible for those who were born and bred in a nice area to get a home, me personaly i feel sorry for the locals

I whole heartedly support the suggestion below.....

It is interesting to read the article and to note that they are possibly going to spend significant sums of money to go through the Suffolk Council and make the following statement -

“The highway is under the jurisdiction of Suffolk County Council and we currently have no authority to gain such a traffic road order. Even if Waveney District Council were to obtain delegated authority to act in this matter, this is not a simple or inexpensive process.

“It would require formal approval of the county council before we could proceed and would also need agreement on enforcement, relevant signage and would have to go through statutory consultation.”

Given all that I think we should go on the tack of any Council should look to ensure it's local businesses are able to capitalize on this increase of motorhome tourists and rather than costing their residents money that they simple allocate us a suitable 'aire' and exploit us.

Over and above this Southwold known problem I have long felt that we should have a regular campaign to try to get Councils to allocate special parking areas (aires) for MHs. To this end I went along to the Head of SW Tourism to see if I could get his support and was really pleasantly surprised at just how supportive he was. I took the idea to one of the MH Mags in the hope of getting it going as a regular feature - let readers identify a good and likely location, provide the Council details etc, then publish the 'opportunity' for an aire and invite MHomers to download a letter and post it to the Council..... Lobby for what we want in other words. Couldn't get them to bite because of course they were too concerned over the potential kick back such a campaign might have on their advertising :(

But on the other hand there is nothing stopping us lot doing something similar;)

I obviously haven't learnt to use the 'quote' facility properly as it hasn't worked all smart and pretty like Mandrakes does

other coastal towns

(thinking out loud)

personally i rarely park up anywhere near built up areas in coastal towns and do not see the attraction but .... i know a lot of people do.

Any one have any thoughts knowledge of this being rolled out or catching on in other coastal 'restorts'? Perhaps the towns should provide dedicated parking for us and charge - (they always soften where possibility of revenues arises)?

amop

ps. i betcha many of those who are blocking views are local to the area

My angle of attack is always on the 'increase your revenue and business for local companies' - after all many carparks lay total idle at night, but with signs stating 'no sleeping in vehicles overnight'......... why oh why not charge us a nominal sum and increase the return on their investment?

Where some Councils adopt a positive attitude it pays them dividends. I spoke with Canterbury Council who promote it at one of their Park & Ride sites and was told that it hasn't given them any problems, just increased usage.

quite a few councils are a little slow on the uptake about staying and paying for an overnight stay a few quid in the meter wont go amiss, but then again that is in the uk the idea is (we have done it that way for years so why change now ) thats how the dodo went extinct ,about time we woke up i think .

I have started a petition to the PM to ask that councils should be made to provide stopping places for the overnight stay of motorhomes. It seems to me a bit ludicrous that visitors,if they drive a certain type of legal vehicle are to be prevented from visiting some towns and cities in their own country.please have a look or better still sign.http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/Overnights/

there are two ways - one is to use the quote button - bottom right hand side of each post

or if you want to be really saucy, if you look at the reply box you will see two lines of things - the first one is Fonts sizes etc and the second line* starts B I U left hand margin, centre text r/h margin etc - keep going along that line and you will see a little world globe? This is "insert link" then "delete link", insert email link, insert image and then (roll of drums) Wrap quote tags around selected text
So we click that and get

The we can go and cut and paste to get

as it hasn't worked all smart and pretty like Mandrakes does

Hope that helps

* if you pause the mouse cursor over the icon it will tell you what it does - have fun

Instead of us all trying to do our own thing, why don't we just support the chap who trying to push for a British system of Aires?
Is it Graham???

Agreed if we can find 'Graham' but in the meantime I have sent info off to Motor Caravan Mag telling them about the No 10 petition and asking for coverage, with the url, so that readers can sign and support us.

I'll do MMM and Practical Motorhome too later today. Anywhere else we should spread the info to the wider audience?

This is a link to Grahams site it has his email address on there.
He was a member on here but doesn't contribute anymore there is also a sample email on his site to lobby your local councils with.
hope this helps

Dear Sir/Madam,
I am contacting all county councils in the UK in order to obtain information to create a database of parking areas which are or are not accessible by drivers of motorhomes. My aim is to provide a resource for the whole country which will enable motorhome drivers to find appropriate facilities easily whilst at the same time directing them away from areas where problems might be caused by vehicle size.
Particular items of information especially relevant are:
1. Height restrictions.
2. Requirements for parking within bay confines (including any requirement for purchasing two parking tickets where the length of a vehicle means that it overhangs a second bay at its rear).
3. Any provision of toilet and waste disposal facilities.
4. Any provision of spaces specifically aimed at motorhomes and/or caravans.
5. Any provision for (or ban on) overnight parking.
6. Restricted access caused by narrow roads/entrances.
If your council does not hold the information requested please pass on this request to the appropriate borough/district/city councils which do hold the information. Regards,
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
