single passenger seat for 2001 transit

Ditto, I'm after one too for my 2002 transit, I've seen a couple on ebay around the £50 - £80 price but with £20+ in delivery charges which makes it very expensive for a second hand seat. I'm going to have a look out in scrap yards to see if I can get one a bit cheaper.

I have seen a single seat for a Transit Connect on ebay which folds forwards which would be perfect for me, but not sure if it would fit into my Transit and I don't really want to have to drill new fitting holes etc in the floor, I'm hoping to be able to use the existing fittings / holes etc. Not sure what a Connect is, I keep meaning to google it.

I did want a swivel single front passenger seat but having seen the prices and assuming that it would be much more work to fit it, I've decided that a folding seat would do just as well, or even just a static seat which would give me space to get through to the cab from inside without having to try to worm my way over the top of the headrests.

Good luck with your hunt, I hope we don't end up in a bidding war on ebay!;)

I used to own a Transit Connect van with the folding seat. The seat is designed to fold flat to the level of the Connects van floor. To do this it has a small cushion under the floor to bolt to. I can't see it working in a normal Transit.
Although if you fit a single static seat. I could see the connect seat fitting in between, as when it folds flat, the rear of the seat back has cup holders and a large tray, which would work for me. Like you WvW I squeeze myself through the gap, luckily my bed is right behind my seat, so I've a soft landing!

Unfortunately the (big) dog's cage is right behind my seats so that he gets straight into it when the side door is opened and doesnt' get a chance to put mud all over the floor, and my bed etc. On top of the cage I have a wooden board which serves as my table top/ work space and my camping stove sits on that, held into place by means of a strap around the middle head rest (difficult to explain) - it's easy to move it but the prob is finding somewhere else for the cooker to be put out of the way, when the bed is down, whilst I try to wriggle over. It's awkward enough doing it in daylight, let alone if I had to do it in emergency by torchlight in the middle of the night, remembering to make sure I've got my keys with me as I wriggle over.

My plan is to remove the double front seat, and to fit a single passenger seat (or Transit Connect seat if it will fit) where the middle seat in the cab is, allowing a walk through where the seat right next to the passenger side door would be (the dogs cage is about 18" short of the sliding door so there could be a walk through along the side of his cage).

Problems exascerbated at present too as I broke the drivers door handle mechanism over New Year, I thought I'd unlocked it and it was just stiff and didn't know my own strength so at present can't open drivers door from outside and having to get in on passenger side and climb across :mad2:

Once it gets above zero degrees and the snow has gone, I'm going to dig out the Haynes Manual which Oldish Hippy discovered for me in a charity shop :bow:and take the inside panel off the door to see if I can fix it. I expect I need to find a new door handle from a scrap yard now aswell as a seat

There isn't much in the way of scrap yards round here but next time I'm down Lancashire way I might have a visit to the scrap yards at Altham - I used to live down that way so I know the area well (near you I think Ste).

Thanks for the info about the Transit Connect seat, Ste, I nearly bought one on Ebay on the off chance that it might fit but will now wait and save myself about £70.

What I found with decent seats when trying to get one for mine is they are rarer than hen's teeth.

Everybody wants them and I'd say £50 to £80 was actually quite cheap for a good one. A lot does depend on the condition though. Some of them are out of high mileage delivery vehicles and to be honest the springs and rubbers can be totally knackered.

Also for the big vans, it's almost impossible to get a passengers seat. They all get made with drivers + a bench. So you may need to find a drivers seat and make do with that "handed". That's what I did in the end. But it's the drivers seats which have taken the battering in high mileage delivery vans.

I wish we had the old type scrap yards where you could walk round the vehicles and take things off yourself. They were cheap! But now they all seem to be closed due to elf and safety. The best round here is official vehicle dismantlers where everything is taken off and catalogued for you and you end up paying about three times as much for it :(

Good luck in your search!

I'm hoping that Ste can confirm that the scrap yards at Altham are still in business as it is a couple of years since I was down that way, and the recent new legislation regarding cash payments for scrap might well be the final straw for them. I have a look at the For Sale thread in the Ford Transit forum every now and again but nothing suitable so far.

But I did see this pic on FB yesterday which has given me something to consider...

Sounds like you need one of the seats I sold. With my van being an ex crewbus, I had 5 seats in the rear all with seatbelts, I sold all 5 for £100 on Ebay. Bit like the single one here. http://http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ford-Transit-Single-Double-Triple-Rear-Seats-New-Shape-Rear-/170975059989?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CommercialVehicleParts_SM&hash=item27cee86015
Another alternative would be to look at adapting a seat from a people carrier.

If you coming down to the scrappy's don't forget to try Watsons at Salterforth. They tend to be a little cheapper than the altham guys. Head for the POI @ Salterforth from the download, go over the canal and continue for half a mile. They're half way up the hill in an old quarry.

As far as I know there's still a couple there. But there's plenty of alternatives nearby

Thanks v much for the ebay link, Ste, I'm going to be down in Merseyside in the next couple of weeks so have emailed him about what I want and I might get it at a decent price. I'd missed that one on ebay.

I've asked him if he would take the double in part ex ;)

Hello fellow monkey fan. It was cos of Athene that I took up playing (or learning to play) the fiddle 30 years after last having played (or tried to play) at school. See you at a gig, no doubt. I'll be the one making horrendous screeching noises with a fiddle in a big white van (with a big black dog) ;-)

By the way, how did they do that with the front seats? Is it permanent or just whilst camping? Fab conversion, am very envious.

See you at Harefield Hall maybe? Dunno if 3DM will be there this year, it was great last year.

The 3DM bus looks like a Renault Master (or clone) to me. Can see the split level of the cab/load bay which is a problem in converting.

The saving grace may be that Tranny Seats are more common than Renault ones.

the scrap yards round here you can wander round with your tools...... safety hat an hi vis vest also

Cheer's, didn't know there was scrappies up that way. Brampton's closer than Lancashire for me so I might have a drive up that way too. Have been promising to go up to Carlisle to visit a friend for ages and he's a trucker and proper petrol head so he'd probably quite enjoy a trip out to the scrappie with me. I'll give you a shout when I'm up that way and we could maybe meet up for a brew at the scrappie.

A Wildcamping meet at a scrappy? Now that's an idea!! :)

I had a similar problem trying to find a single passenger seat for my Transit van. The odd ones that I found were either a different fitting than mine or were going for a silly price. After a few weeks of fruitless searching, I solved the problem by cutting a double seat down to a 3/4 width. This left plenty of room for easy access from front to back, and also left more seat area than a single seat, useful if you like to store maps etc on it whilst driving.

I peeled the upholstery away to expose the tubular steel frame, then used a hacksaw to cut the frame to a suitable width. (Make sure that the parts of the frame that you cut away won't affect its strength/integrity for use as a single seat). So long as you are careful with a stanley knife when you cut the upholstery, you can re-fit it to make the finished seat look very neat and tidy. The MOT tester was happy with it as a single seat conversion, so there was no problem.

Alternatively, if you don't plan to carry a passenger (and are prepared to just drive past any attractive hitch-hikers!) you could just remove the seat completely, either temporarily or permanently. :):)

they are due to be there

See you at Pateley Bridge then, gonna get my ticket this week. No way am I going down that track to the field again!!! Couldn't get back up it last year. Ditto re the beers, I had to go back to the van to eat and recover from the Old Rosy for an hour or so at teatime - I was sad but kinda relieved when they ran out of it.

I would love to go to Bearded, I have a few mates who go, but I can't cos of the dog. There's just me and him and we do everything together. I did think about maybe putting him in kennels near Bearded for a couple of nights but it adds another £30 ish to the cost, and it's already a bit pricey if you include the campervan ticket, especially for only 1 person. Last year I did Lakefest which was the same weekend as Bearded as they allow dogs and will prob do that again as Levs playing (although they said that last year...!!).

You're not too far from me, I often head up into the Durham Dales for a night or 2 - I'll PM you next time I'm up that way and we could meet if you fancy it. Cow Green is a good spot to play loud music late at night

i might well attempt a cut down and will be asking you for more infor and / or photos of your seat before I do any cutting.

I have thought about removing the seat as I don't often have a passenger and if it's not too involved, it could always be put back in if I did have a passenger. I might try that in the first instance and see how it works.
