Ok thanks makes sense hot water - i'll think about a mix and match then maybe something like this to lose water trap around shower tray with mastic/sealant adhesive

i wouldn't use any of these. a good cleaning and apply a seal of decent quality silicone like Dow Corning . if you don't know how to get a neat finish i'll tell you

I'm speaking as a total ignoramus about this (nowt new there then, I hear you all shout! lol), but it has seemed to me for a long while that the design and fitting of shower trays and making everything waterproof often falls well short of the practical mark. Not just in campers/mohos mind, but in house fittings too.

I have a vague recollection in the back of my mind of someone telling me about 10 years ago that there was a new way of fitting shower trays that the plumbing industry was moving towards? Involved a good quality waterproof membrane being fitted between the tray, the floor and up the wall before the shower tray was put in place.

Maybe I dreamt it?

Whatever, it seems to me that the cheap, nasty and mostly non-functioning (or short-lived!) tat for 'sealing showers' post-installation is very much alive and flourishing, more's the pity 😝 :((n)

Personal opinion: seen a few bathrooms with that stuck on trim, it looks really naff and very much a botched job. Much better to take the time and care to remove all the old silicone, thoroughly clean all areas and apply new quality silicone.

What I use:

WD40 to remove the old silicone.

Everflex 500 bathroom silicone.

There are plenty of You tube clips on the best ways to go about removing and applying silicone.

Dow Corning as Nigel recommends is good too, the important thing is getting a good quality silicone.

No probs removing and cleaning off silicon and final clean up with IPA - reseal and clean up wet finger - water and a bit of cloth if i silicon i'll use everflex 500 - i'm trying to lose the water trap so it all runs into shower

It is all in the prep and using quality materials Marie, there are lots of good vids out there, it really isn't difficult to get a fully sealed shower tray and enclosure that will last for many many years. I have fitted six bathrooms for ourselves and a few for others, never had a leak or a call back.
If the shower has been poorly fitted in the first instance where the tray rocks, not supported underneath or is poor quality, it is best to rip the thing out and start again.

I'll get a photo later and you can see what i mean by water trap and the problem it has caused where sealant has failed and reason i'm resealing the lot again

Ok here is a pic you can see the edge ( water trap ) you can also sealant has failed due to wall joint finish starting to bow out ( separation ) so the bottom around shower is all i want to seal properly and eliminate the edge ( water trap ) anything above this level i would silicon

Only removed silicon so far still needs cleaning up before doing anything

I would be concerned about what it is like behind the panel and be tempted to rip it out and replace with upvc wall panels, there are some neat designed panels with tile, stone, marble effect finishes. We stuck ours on with Grip Fix, very easy to do.

Solid behind there poked with thin screwdriver - there are run offs on the shower tray but not in the corner - and i want to eliminate/reduce the amount of water that sits there - most people seem to think silicon would be better so if that is only option end of day i'll get some tomorrow stick lifted bit back and re-silicon

Forget my questions i've cleaned joint had a look - shower tray is a belt and braces job it's like a step doesn't matter if i seal joint or not i will though just to stop the dirt going in joint

Thanks for the good advise

Nigel show them how you use your tool to get a smooth finish :)

Here's what I would use for waterproof panelling if doing a self build, or ripping out and re-fitting or upgrading a moho bathroom.
It's what we used for our house shower and my mother's shower room years ago. Brilliant stuff.

They have a good range of designs to suit all tastes, but don't know if that's still the case re covid knock-on effect? Assuming it will be as house building doesn't seem to have slowed down much during lockdown as far as we can tell?

The more expensive brand available elsewhere is called Mermaid, but Rearo do their own brand panels which are just as good at the Mermaid board.
We used the branch nearest us on the Team Valley, Gateshead, but they have branches elsewhere (haven't looked where, it'll be be on their website (see link above).
