Shou Sugi Ban for My Cabin

Hi everyone,

I'm in the process of planning a small cabin build and am considering using Shou Sugi Ban for the exterior cladding. I love the idea of the rustic, charred look and the added durability, especially with fire resistance and weathering. However, I'm stuck deciding whether to go the DIY route and char the wood myself or purchase pre-charred boards
I’ve seen a few suppliers, like TimberSol, offering pre-charred timber, but I’m curious if anyone here has worked with Shou Sugi Ban or similar techniques in their builds. What’s the long-term maintenance like? Is it worth the extra cost to buy pre-charred wood, or is DIY the way to go?

We used untreated 20mm Larch when we built ours. It's supposed to last to around 30 years. Built using stone with Larch cladding on 50%.plus the view is nice

If you burn your own you can decide how dark you want it. I have been doing it for years with my trusty felt roof blow lamp and adjustable bottled gas regulator. You can use a wire brush to take off the excess carbon. Be careful or you will leave a raised grain. I use Linseed Oil as a preservative.

Is your "cabin" a stand alone none moveable building, or are you asking about the hab area of a MoHo.

You do need to plan your work on a motor home which is what the OP mentions rather than "planning permission".
