Selling Italian motorhome in Britain

Hello everyone,
I am looking at making a private sale or trade-in with a dealer (in Britain) for another vehicle. Does anyone know if its legal to sell an Italian registered motorhome in Britain, and if so, does it require much messing about and does it cost very much? I understand that on the Italian end one needs to obtain a customs export form but if I do not do that, how easy is it to arrange in Britain?

Also, is it legal to own a British registered vehicle but to have insurance with a company in Italy? Reason I ask is that although I am a British citizen, because I do not live there full time, I do not qualify for the lower rates of insurance, being forced to go with companies like Downunder who charge outrageous premiums and have lousy service in my past experience. Camper insurance in Italy is a very fair rate I have found.

you will be deemed to have imported it and as the importer you will have to notify NOVA' notification of vehicle arrival' its part of the old DVLA the buyer can then register and tax it ,if its not on the NOVA database the buyer cant register it. About the insurance I dont know but we drive in France etc with UK insurance

A few years since I was involved with this , It can all be done but there are i's and t's to be dotted and crossed.

The Certificate of export,shows that the relevant taxes have been paid 1.e the Italian equivalent of VAT. a certificate of conformity used to be required for the vehicle, a dealer or manufacturer will help with that some charge others don't not a two minute job though.

You may well find even all this complied with British dealers reluctant to take in PX. British regd vehicles can and are checked for outstanding finance an if they are recorded on VCAR /HPI...vehicle condition alert register, shows stolen accident damaged vehicles With imported vehicles no info exists re the first years of its life. Due diligence expected of dealers mean a lot wont wan t to know....

A dealer can buy 12 vehicles a day , why buy one with a story ?. i wouldn't do it. We were often offered Evo's imported from Japan , 4x4's from the middle east and wouldn't touch them with a barge pole. It was a biggish dealer group too.

Insurance is not an issue, when I lived in France my pal insured through Axa in Nice, English speaking office whom I believe also cover Italy. They are happy to insure a UK regd vehicle to a French address etc but there is anexpectation albeit a loose one the vehicle will be re registered in the new host country.

That can open a potential can of worms, for example i was once told in Spain a vehicle with the hab door on our nearside wiouldnt pass their mot equivalent..ok Spain not Italy but do they have similar idiosyncracies ?

In Spain you can import your existing UK vehicle even LHD and door on wrong side if you move there and are applying for residency it can have an ITV and be registered on Spanish plates. but once a Spanish resident you cannot then import a RHD vehicle and get it ITVd.

Thats strange as I have lived in Spain as a Spanish resident for 7 years now and only last year imported a RHD ( 25 year old MG ) car from UK and registered it and ITV it only 3 days ago for another year, so not so were you got that info from.

Mg's slightly different to a motorhome , I believe the issue is with the side of the habitation door nothing to do with being rhd.

Can you Tax it for use here with Italian Insurance ? It'll also need a current MOT certificate

Well I went and asked at local ITV (MOT) centre this morning and they will only fail a MH, if the lights and not correct and the tyre are wrong ( mixed not accepted ) here in Spain. I have seen a few RHD motorhomes here with Spanish plates.
