Seized locks

Having just had a new alarm/immobiliser fitted, it brought a problem to light - my locks are all seized!

I have never used the key mechanically to open the locks and the fitter said that it is likely that the previous owner didn't either. The vehicle is a 2012 Renault Master.

I suggested some WD40 and some fiddling about with the key to free up the tumblers, but he said WD40 might be a bit heavy and maybe a penetrating oil would be better.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Graphite based lubricant WD40 displaces water a short term lubricant but not a lubricant in the true sense

PlusGas, WD 40, GT85 to actually free the lock.
But the recommended lube for most locks used
regularly is just dry Graphite powder (ground up pencil
lead will do) oily products will hold grit and crap.
But if you're not going to use the lock barrel regularly
then it might be preferable to lightly oil to prevent corrosion
seizure and not dry Graphite.

only thing to ad is use the key occasionally to keep it free .

Julie has just reminded me that a few weeks ago, I bought an oil spray called Baufix from Lidl.

It is a lubricant and rust remover and there is a picture on the can of it being used sprayed into a door lock.

I will give it a quick try on one of the locks and report back on the short term results.

All the locks ?

I used my 2009 keyhole for the first ever time a couple days ago. Battery in the plipper had gone flat.

If you DO have the right key use some WD40 or graphite powder

See too much drinks made you go all stiff

This is what I used when mine seized on my old van just a tiny amount and a lot of key wiggling did the trick.

There are only 2 locks with key access and they are the passenger and rear doors. Both seem to be seized.

I have put some of the Lidl spray into the locks and will leave it a couple of hours. No sign of improvement as yet.

I have something that is a bit tasty but can’t remember name. It’s over at Charlie’s van at the moment but when I get it back later I will post the name. It is expensive though but a good addiction to the toolkit. Graphite may not free the locks off but is good once free.

We’ve had our 2008 Renault Master based M/H for 5 years and never used the key to unlock the drivers door. Just popped out and key wouldn’t work the lock. Quick WD40 spray and it now works so I’ve made a note to use the key occasionally in the future.

I have a strong suspicion that you have the wrong key, see how you go over the weekend, it might be a job for a locksmith next week.

It is better to find the locks don't work while parked on your drive than discovering it in the middle of nowhere, if only nature made everything that doesn't get used much stiffer

If its not being used, get rid of it.

Thin oil and if you or Julie have anything to vibrate the tumblers to increase penetration? Behave you lot!

You realise I meant your electric shaver as I am sure Julie would not need one.
