Sealant for motorhome sink

I have noticed the sealant (or it could be sealant tape) is starting to go at the back of our bathroom sink (Swift Esprit 496). There is a section of about three inches in the corner where its gone completely but I think it could be a bit longer than that where its failed.

I don't think its a big issue but should probably be resealed but how and what with. Could I just go over the top of what is already there with something like this? Or would some kind of sealant tape be better?

Any Silicone sealant should be fine Barry, you're looking to seal not fix so the one you list may be a bit over the top.

I find a gun far easier to use than a tube, might be worth having a look around and see if any other areas e.g. the shower might need re-doing to avoid opening a tube for such a small job.

...also I would take out the whole bead where you are doing the repair and replace all of it with a new bead.

The panel looks a bit rotted at the edges, if so I would be tempted to chop out the rot and stick a length of quadrant along the joint.

To make sure the mastic/silicone sticks to both surfaces I would remove the whole bead, as Rob says. Then the gap wants to be clean and free of grease so you can push the mastic into the gap and not just use a bead on the top.

I agree with the previous recommendations. That is one of the few areas in the motorhome where I would use silicone sealant, but it does need to be on a clean surface, not over the top of the old stuff. I would say that stiff like stixall is an adhesive rather than a sealant, and would be too rigid. Robmac's advice re adding a quadrant looks spot-on

Thanks. This is already sounding a bit above my pay grade. I don't want to mess it up and make it look awful. I presume a quadrant is like a bit of wood the full length? Will the quadrant stick out? I think I might have to refer it to my motorhome guy.

Alternatively you can use the bathroom sealant tape Barry, just clean surfaces, peel backing tape off and stick in place. Same stuff you would use at home and real quick and easy. Get it in lots of different widths, profiles and colours. You probably just need the narrowest white one?

Just search for something like bathroom mastic sealing tape. Many pages will come up on Amazon, you need to look to get an idea. This may do it though rather than the L type?

My good friend who was a plumber (and a very good one) used to take exception to Mrs B referring to the sink in the bathroom - "It's a washbasin, your sink is in the kitchen".
He has a lot to answer for, it was him who got us into motorhoming, I'd be a somewhat richer man otherwise. However, he can't answer now, he's no longer with us, unblocking the great plughole in the sky

This is the sort of thing I was thinking of Barry;

It all depends on the gap you have between the panel and the sink (or washbasin) as to what size quadrant you can use and of course there are various self adhesive versions available as others have pointed out.

Obviously you are not sticking to tiles and a bath but you get the picture.

Looks like original was clear silicone, I'd be looking at cutting back the small discoloration with a Stanley knife and re silicone with matching colour, unless the gaps too big then as mention above a plastic infill, maybe one from the tiling section in a DIY place.

I have to say, as I have form for being a bit of a klutz with silicone sealant, I'd be in difficulty in making a neat job of it into the corner. Unless the tap was removed to make matters easier, but that opens up a different can of worms

Another idea Barry.

Chop up a Cava cork into slivers, smash them into the gap with a lump hammer then paint a colour of your choice, preferably after several Leffe's. When did a Cava cork ever let you down?

If you use masking tape on both surfaces giving the required amount of bead, then use a wet implement to smooth out the sealant, remove tape and voila, perfect finish. Is there anything you could practice on before doing it for real? Anything with a 90° angle would do the trick.
