Screwed by the DVLA

It dropped through the letterbox this afternoon, start dated 24th January.

To be honest Pete, it is a serious worry, a person can drive a 4 wd and a caravan well over 3500kg, but a m/h no larger than a 3500kg m/h just uprated and it is a BIG no no.

That post is confusing Graham, forget your HGV entitlement for a second

At 70 if you renew your licence with Grandfather rights you can drive up to 7500 kgs and a 750 kg trailer....so this would cover you for a 4x4 plus caravan or MH not exceeding 7500 kgs

If you don't renew your grandfather rights the licence issued is in effect as if you had passed a driving test 1997 onwards

You are then restricted to 3500 kgs so a motorhome plated at 4100 kgs is illegal 3500kgs combined is also the limit re what I highlighted

So if you are pulling a caravan with a 4x4 where the combined GTW exceeds 3500 KGS you are legal but whilst the gtw may exceed 3500 kgs ...the true weight roadside must not exceed 3500 kgs .

My understanding is post 2013 the gtw must not exceed 3500 kgs of the combination

I hope that makes sense and is my understanding although elsewhere I have read people adamant that post 97 the gtw must not exceed 3500 kgs.

I suspect the inequality boils down to a caravan is classed as a trailer hence the combined calculation the drawing vehicle below 3500 kgs eg a 4x4 typically weighs 2000 kgs

don't make it easy do they ?

the situation with trailers isnt helped by the goverment websites not being clear on whether they are refering to plated max weights or actual weights, this confusion is then either repeated or the wrong interpretation posted on commercial and press etc websites .
then you can even find old gov websites with old regulations on them where its not immediatly obvious that the regs quoted are out of date.

i rarely tow anything heavy with my 100l transit van now as i know there can be no arguments about weights or tachos with my 4x4 fourtrak . (up to 3.5 tonne trailer , no tacho cos it aint a commercial vehicle)

The medical is the same for C and C1, just the renewal times are different.

So it comes down to one medical or three?

Cost of the medical is £75 or more.

I think I'd rather have the annual medical and know where I stood than wait three years and fail.
