With us finally going back over the water this summer with a new van and our Trusty Honda vision 110 Im looking to renew our insurance and as the bike is now out of warranty ill need breakdown cover I guess. My current provider only insures for single trips of 30 days. Who are people with bikes using for Euro trips now for a single trip of 90 days? Its due for renewal mid March.

Im about to start the search online but thought I would ask here also.

Its proving to be a bit of a headache already as you cannot trust what they say online or even what their advisors tell you. I can get the 90 days insurance ok. Bennetts for example do that and they told me over the phone to just add on their RAC policy for breakdown but reading the small print it doesn't cover bikes under 121cc and the Vision is 109cc. Be Moto has come up with a quote for both insurance and breakdown coming in at a whopping £210 but their breakdown is also RAC and ill want it confirming that is covered being 109cc. Swinton claim on their site you get 90 days insurance cover for the EU but again reading the small print thats single trips up to 30 days.

You will struggle to find anyone to give breakdown cover to anything under 150cc the RAC used to be a 150 limit. they have obviously altered it.

I found the small print on the RAC deal with Be Moto and its under 49cc they dont cover for EU breakdown. So it looks like they are the only one. I think the breakdown cover is probably £90 of that £210. Most people are saying dont bother but given the miles we do and the bike is coming up to 16000 miles and now out of warranty I think it would be daft not to have it. That said its already covered for the UK on my general all vehicle policy so its effectively only needed for 90 days in Europe.

We don't bother and over the years there has only been one time when we could have used it. We were over 60klms away from the van late Sunday afternoon in the middle of nowhere with no phone signal. A nice Frenchman rescued us and got us back to the van. Something will always turn up.

Come to think about it Im not sure I bothered the last few years we were abroad with the old Honda Vision. We do get to some out of the way places though. Even when the transmission got screwed over last backend by that dodgy mechanic in Devon so it only had one gear it always kept going. We would have been screwed on the Col Du Tourmalet though.

Although I have UK & EU breakdown insurance on all my motorbikes (as standard in the policy) I wouldn't bother trying to get it for a bike that's carried on the back of a MH. If the worst happened you could get a local geezer to uplift it and take it back to the MH. (After all you wont need it recovering to the UK).

But, one day, the something that will turn up will be your toes ...

When we had a scooter a couple of years back the only provider i could find for over 30 days was Express Insurance.. they gave 365 days full comp on a 125cc
