Still misquoting me, John. Time to stop that.

"....and even charged the same amount...." When I was a teacher I was not a maths teacher, but I have it on good authority that £8 is not the same amount as £13.80. Let's face it, your "I have been misquoted!" response to anything uncomfortable is wearing a bit thin. You often complain about poiliticians but you are very good at using their excuses.

Sort of Off Topic - forgive me.

Prompted, eventually, by the fuss over Scarborough. You can't mention Scarborough on this site without provoking furious reactions and suddenly I've remembered something not forgotten but not thought about for a long time.

Towards the end of the 1960's, maybe as late as 1969 but certainly in the 60's, I was given the Freedom of the City of a North Yorks City. Yeah, ok, I have to be honest, it was my unit, given in gratitude for something or other - I can't claim personal responsibility. The wars I was involved in have been forgotten now but they were real enough at the time and the public were on a "we love the forces fest" a bit like they are now. Certainly they were in N Yorks.

One of the freedoms was the freedom to march through the city with drums beating and bayonets fixed. And 30 or 40 of us did just that to receive the honour. From memory not many of us were all that keen to do it but there you are, we did it. The drums beating were provided by the RAF Central Band and the "bull", a bit lacking in our 30 or 40, was provided by the Queen's Colour Squdron (Rockape, you listening?). It was a splendid day.

It was a hot day and I remember it fairly clearly. Cut my finger on one of those bayonets! But what stood out was the reception from the local people later. Very nice. Of course, though our little 60's wars have been forgotten the second WW hasn't and wsn't and at that time, little more than twenty years later, there were plenty of ex-servicemen around to shed a few tears for us - and to make sure we had pint or two later - very welcome at any time but especially welcome on that hot day.

Do you suppose now, that if I parked overnight, I could plead that I had freedom of the city? If I gave up my freedom to march through the stteets with bayonet fixed, maybe?

Yes it was me but in Newquay and the offence was "Parked in a parking place not designated for that type of vehicle"

The ticket is being appealed so I'll let you know what the outcome is.

Thanks Rubbertramp, I'll be interested in the result. No, this is the one I was thinking of:

hi all just thought you might want to know parked in Pavilion top car park Whitby 30th August to fish the pier with my grandson 14yrs old and brother in law 69yrs and I am 65. high tide at 3:30am. Returned at 7:30am to find penalty charge notice attached to the windscreen. The printed notice states contravention code 95 parked in a parking place for a purpose other than the designated purpose of the parking place. £50.00 penalty charge or £25.00 if paid within fourteen days, the notice was left at 6:06am, by who ?. Parked in the same spot three times this year again to fish the pier at night and had no problem, each time cars were parked all night next to us possibly from local hotels and guest houses, but we noticed this time the car park was empty apart from us. Notices have been posted, typed letters held on with plastic ties, and hard to read. With no parking any were near the harbor or pier at night we will not be able to carry on fishing, Scarborough council must be aware that most of us do not have a second vehicle we travel everywhere in our motor home, just because we are parked we are not camping. Any comments would be appreciated.
