The person I'm travelling with has a brand new Garmin 770. First the lead for the reversing camera went - can't get into it to see if it's a fuse - and now the lead to the satnav isn't lighting up so no power. We're down on the Algarve and it's a long way back to Aberdeen where she lives. Anyone any suggestions apart from buy a new one? Where could she take it to get it fixed, bearing in mind however it's under guarantee. Any ideas gratefully accepted!

Does it plug into a 12v socket? If so try the fuse in the 12v cigar lighter plug and try a different socket. (your van?).

If the problem is with Sat Nav rather than 12v supply contact Garmin. Anything else could impact warranty.

There are quite a few dealers in the Algarve if she has paperwork for it I am sure they will sort it out there as it is under warranty a Garmin dealer is a Garmin dealer here there or anywhere if you post where you are exactly I can google for you and find one near to you or if you have internet there just go onto garmin.com find a dealer and put in your location. Even if you ring the dealer and explain and ask worth a shot. Garmin are also very helpful it may be worth ringing them and explaining they may even say take it to such and such for an exchange you never know:) Good luck

Some plugs have a fuse inside. Gently try to unscrew the tip of the plug and look for a fuse. Also plug something else in the socket to make sure it's not the problem. There is a chain of shops in Spain called Media Market they sell everything electrical, the leads are only a type of USB and should be readily available.

Hi all, thanks for the tips so far. I did try it in my 12v socket and nothing ... so presume that eliminates her socket as the problem. Strange that both leads have gone ... ?

Could be a fuse inside the 12v plug that plugs into the socket Carol.

It should unscrew fairly easily to check.

I said to Jenny, " Carol is having sat nav problems".

Jenny asked, Where is she? ".

"I don't know ", I replied .

" Neither does she! ", was her retort.

I'm sure one of the experts will sort you out.

I'll ask a couple, when we join them for a meal, tonight.

Buy another 12v power cable / lead, i think you`ll find they are 5volt / 2amp supply and should be readily available.

DO NOT try your 12v power cable / lead in it just in case the sat nav had damaged the power cable / lead.

That way at least your sat nav will still work.

Haha, I'm useless without my satnav but not that useless tell her! Actually Paul, it's not me it's Jeanette's new super dooper Garmin. Actually, I've got my old Tomtom with me just in case my new breaks down or gets nicked! Obviously she can borrow thar but it's not a patch on the Garmin Camper.

Some Garmin have a reset button usually a flush button just had a look at mine but can't see one on it. It most likely came with a usb lead that you connect it to the computer which will also power it

Hi Rob, ta for suggestion but definitely no screw as it's one mounded unit.
If you look at the end of the moulded unit where the metal tip comes out there should be two slots either side of it, you can put a small pair of scissors in to the slots and unscrew the end anti clockwise, pull it off and the fuse is behind it

If you cannot do that then buy a mini usb charging lead (not a micro usb) from any hypermarket and use that

edit:
Check the connection if it is a new Garmin, this one is a micro usb41tGJxBMhtL._SY355_.jpg

According to Amazon it's got a Mini USB Connector.

You will also need one of these

12v to USB at least 2amp output

Plugs into 12v cig socket.

If you have a smartphone

Download a suitable app

I use Mapsme

It does give proper satnav type directions although not a comprehensive as your Garmin or TomTom

Or go to one of the stores and buy a very cheap satnav

Thanks everyone, I've passed all your suggestions on to Jeanette.

we never had a sat nav , we headed south to get down there , and north to get back, worked every time !
