Hi All

Our old satnav has died and I'm thinking of replacing it whilst the sales are on.
Does anyone have any recomendations?

I need to be able to swap it between vehicles ~ camper van/car
I only need UK mapping

Many thanks

I would look for one where the lifetime mapping update is included I get fed up with mine freaking out when I drive on a new section of road

Pro_nav

Hi Elfit,

Pro-nav are doing deal for £135.00p on their PNN 350 with slight marks on the cases. I have just exchanged my old PNN 200 with them and it cost me a lot more before Christmas, the PNN350 has length and height and HGV Routes.
The main office is Navevo ltd in Letchworth Garden City Hertfordshire SG6 4ET. They have a web site it may be worth a look.

Regards Snowbirds.

Sat nav

Hi frontslide,

I quite agree with you the garmin looks good, I only went for Pro-Nav again as I got an exchange on the old unit and it also has the Motorhome size on it and I paid extra for camera up dates and will still still have to pay extra for Western Europe mapping.
With Pro-nav prices it may pay me to get cheaper one just for Europe.

I think you need to say how much you are prepared to spend ?

They can start at as little as £35 see link :-

Binatone F350 UK Republic Of Ireland GPS Sat Nav

and go right up to several hundred pound for The Dogs Doodahs of all Sat-Navs.

We have been using a Garmin sat nav for about 4 years but you had to pay to update it, but it has been very good. Yesterday i was in halfords and they have a sale and i got a garmin with ALL of Europe on it and free updates for life. So if they have not fitted it with self district after the first year it should be a good buy at £119 :drive:

This with the book Camperstop downloads all you need

Warning

Which ever one you get make sure you CAN download stuff on to it. A lot of the newer ones didn't a year or so ago. I actually ordered a Tom Tom (can't remember the model , but not the cheaper end ones) & I sent it back because I couldn't put the POIs on to it

Interesting but isn't a 10 inch tablet a little big for the dashboard. Also does it react as fast as a dedicated sat/nav (when you go wrong)

Hello OldPoliceHouse

On our panel van conversion (citreon relay) we have a nifty clipboard holder mounted into the dash, the tablet sticks nicely to that. With regards to the software i honestly say it was better than tomtom garmin as its more intutive, just as accurate and has an excellent nav screen. Check out some of the screen shots on sygic.com. the 10.1 screen is superb as i no longer press the wrong buttons when bouncying along country roads. I have all the POIs loaded into both the satnav and google earth. This has saved us on many a dark lonley night looking for a nice spot to pull up. The £15 membership for the POIs alone is excellent.

The tablet goes everywhere with me. I have it loaded with his and hers music too which is coupled to our radio via a jack lead.. we also have a logitec boombox bluetooth speaker for when we are parked up. They are 79 in PC world and a true must for any music loving campervaner..

If you have a PC world or JohnLewis near you pop in and give one a test drive. I paid £178 for mine as it came with 50quid cashback.. this is it Buy Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 Tablet, 16GB, Wi-Fi, 1GHz Dual-Core, 10.1-inch Display, White online at JohnLewis.com

How about a 5" Navman / Mio?

I've had one of the first TomTom's and they are good bits of kit. The fact though that you have to pay extra for EVERYTHING gets my goat though.

Garmin? I've used a few, and they don't have as good an interface as the TomTom and others IMO - almost too simplistic (which sounds good but can also be frustrating).

Last year I bought a Navman Tourer Europe (Navman as a brand is I think being phased out, but basically they are Mio units rebadged anyhow. These use the same Teleatlas mapping as TomToms, but have good standard features (mine includes free Traffic for life for example).

It doesn't have Bluetooth but it allows route planning on the fly on the unit (adding waypoints) and easily lets you divert off-route to a waypoint such as fuel or food on the fly too and then returns to the original route plan - v handy! It also has 4 route selection options which you can select off the screen if you want to (fastest, economical, shortest and one I can't remember ;) and you can view them on a map. Its not perfect, but I get on with it well.

I've used mine on the motorcycle (using a weatherproof mount and using the screen not the voice prompts - easy) and in several vehicles and it works well. The voice is a bit tinny compared to a TomTom or Garmin though. I believe these can be had for under £100 now, so thats not too bad either.

Also handy (and a deliberate choice on my part) was that this Sat Nav charges off a mini-usb connection, and at PC USB voltage (5.2v I think). This means that its easy to find a way to charge the thing (e.g. I have a USB charger set-up on my motorcycle so i can run the sat nav, charge my phone or my MP3 player with the same source). 12v Cigar - USB charge converters are common and cheap as well.

As for POI's Speed Camera databases and such (not too much of a worry for me in Sully with a Transit 'Banana 2.5L Diesel non-turbo tbh) then its worth checking out Pocket GPS World - SatNavs | GPS | Speed Cameras for cheaper and comprehensive Speed Camera POI's for a massive range of PND's (personal navigation device) as well as other stuff for less wonga.

Hope this helps and gives some food for thought. All the best. G.
