Sat Nav mapping for MHs?

Does anyone know if Tom Tom do suitable mapping for big motorhomes?

Given that lorry drivers must need this I would have thought it should be available but we cannot find it.
This would be really useful as often ordinary (car) sat nav info is not appropriate to larger vehicles.

Try Tom Tom Truck, apparently they work for Truckers :drive:

Fairytooth on this site is the guy you want brilliant with Tom Tom . Often has truck Tom toms for sale or I think if your model is compatible he can upgrade it

Regards Ian:wave:

Just google truck satnav or motorhome satnav, you'll be amazed at what you find.

Garmin do some nice models suitable for motorhomes

As always, a thorough online search will reveal lowest prices.

Some of the advantages of Garmin over tomtom are

  • Completely free maps for many countries
  • Free BaseCamp and MapSource software (install guide)
  • View your maps, upload/download routes, tracks, waypoints etc. on PC/Mac
  • Lots of free POIs available, many of them free

There have been quite a few reports that the Garmin software does not work satisfactorily with vehicle dimensions ...

So take care before you buy.

Never had any such a problem with Garmin Camper models but I've heard many say the same about tomtom.
I've been using both brands for more years than I care to remember, and in general I prefer Garmin.

I use a Truck Tomtom and it has never let me down or sent me through somewhere that my Hymer is too large, it is getting a bit old now so I am replacing it with another Truck Tomtom

You're being rather selective - see posts #9 & 11. And the sad case post #20 who failed to try his new satnav before updating the maps. You CANNOT buy a Garmin satnav without maps installed.

ALL satnavs will send you the wrong way at some stage if you travel a lot. I've travelled many thousands of miles in several countries using Garmin satnavs and have never been sent along a road with restrictions which I can't drive past except one road in Morocco where a bridge over a river was being repaired. At the time I was using 3rd party free maps which didn't have the necessary data.
Tomtom satnavs have attempted to send me past 'No Entry' signs and frequently suggested a wrong turn at a junction, away from my final (post code) destination.
I can't take tomtom seriously until such time as you can install the excellent free OSM maps, like you can on Garmin models.

I wasn't being selective - if you read all the posts following you will see that I tested TomTom Truck and it passed this (limited) test whereas the Garmin did not.

Perhaps you could try yours and see if it passes? Hopefully the base map data, if that was the cause, has been updated.

I did consider buying the Garmin, but there are very poor reviews on Amazon by those who have bought the 760.

I have the Garmin version and I never know if it works or not because it uses official data from local authorities where there is a specific restriction. However once leaving the beaten track, ie first and last mile, it says the it has no information on restrictions and doesn't always use the most suitable direct route to return to a main road. My first satnav bought from the AA about 15 years ago had a selection screen where you could set your preferences for different types of roads and if I selected 100% Main Roads and 0% Minor Roads then it would do exactly that and stick to the main road until it had no choice but to divert off. The current Garmin models don't have this facility as good as it is. For the restrictions only I don't believe these Camper versions are worth the money, IMO, but they have other features which are better than the previous models.

Thanks guys - that is really useful. Yes one can search the web but first hand recommendations and usage is always more valuable.

try mapfactor flower3

you can download mapfactor sat nav free for use on any tablet etc, then download maps for each country you need, then pay extra for tom tom maps if required..........mapfactor is brilliant for finding things, and way around once you practised.......steve bristol

The Garmin 760 Camper DOES work. I proved this for myself by swopping between the Car and Camper settings and comparing routes. The Garmin warned me that my route may be unsuitable for the camper (when using the car but with the satnav set to Camper).

My Garmin 760 Camper is rubbish, set to my motorhome size it often takes me down very narrow country lanes as short cuts instead of staying on the main road and turning at the next junction.

It's very misleading of you to say it's 'rubbish' just because you don't like narrow lanes. I bet your motorhome will fit down those lanes. You could always alter the route preferences, tell your SatNav your vehicle is wider, look well ahead, observe direction road signs and apply common sense.
I much prefer minor roads to boring main roads and motorways, unless I'm short on time, and my 760 has never sent me along a road which is too narrow.
Contrary to your opinion, the Garmin Camper 760 is the best SatNav I've ever used, and I've used several makes and models over the years.

Could you please try your 760 with the latest maps to see if it still routes under bridges that are too low?

The coordinates are given earlier in this thread.

Thank you :D

I will do if I find the coordinates. Don't appear to be on this thread.

I presume he means these posted by Norm De Plume

Sorry for the late reply - There are 2 bridges, both in Needham Market in Suffolk. The co-ordinates are 52.150210, 1.058671 and 52.156855, 1.051150.

It'll be interesting to hear how well TomTom does...
