Sat nav decisions

Hmm. This thread is starting to get as interesting as the portable power unit topic.

OK, so if I can't update Garmin then at what stage does the old mapping become useless?

Reason I ask is that we used to tug with a Nissan X Trail which we still have with no plans to get rid. The Nissan sat nav has never been updated since 2011 as it is a disk based update (no USB on this model) and Nissan want £160 for their last disk based update available which was 2015 so I have passed thankyou.

Point is even though the data is 11 years old it still does its job 99% of the time. OK you get the odd bit of new road in France or the UK which does cause a bit of satnav confusion but it is not such a deal breaker that I want to fork out £160 for something that is 7 years old anyway.. A bit of driving common sense and I am soon back on track.

So will my Garmin 760 be good enough for the next 10 years without updates and if not why not?

I do have a smart phone so if the satnav really does get me lost I can always refer to that.

OK the TOMTOM above is broken so a replacement of some sort is required but what about those who have working sat navs all be it with outdated data?
I've updated a couple of disc sat nags with ones from ebay and had no problems so take the disc out check the version and get one ordered I think my last one was about £12

The current generation of the Tom Tom app does not allow importing third party POIs.

That is why I ceased using it.
Yes as you say.
There is a way you can copy single pois from google etc.
But very clumsy and not for bulk import.
What app does allow ?
More investigation I think !
Custom pois are vital as you well know

maps.me allows easy adding of POIs either individual at the point you're at or importing such as from the WC downloads, you just email the file to yourself and open it and it auto loads into the app.

I'm reading that POI sets can be imported on to GM.

Apple products are no use to many of us I suspect.

Will see how organic maps w orks.
I use. It all the time but not tried its navigation whilst driving.
The devil will be in the detail in complicated situations.
Eg multiple lefts and rights and lane guidance

ATM I have 3 different 'satnavs', TT510 which is my favourite, a bit slow to fire up (I believe latest version has faster chip), but can download maps of just about any country, and has 'lifetime' map updates, traffic, and speed cams. Can be a PITA to get POI's on it, but doable. One of my favourite bits is the large clear speed readout, which when on continent is much easier to read than kpm on speedo.
Windowsphone maps, once again can download, and use offline, pretty much any country I want FOC, POI's are a PITA but doable after a fashion.
Google Maps, only just started using this, can download and use offline a limited amount of any countries maps, I guess about 1/4 of England at a time, not sure if there's a way to overcome this, or if it will prove a problem. Also it doesn't seem to give an audible alert if you stray over speed limit, once again not sure if this can be changed, also the speed readout seems a bit small, not sure if this can be changed. Not yet looked into POI's.

I have the Aguri combined sat-nav and dash cam which is really a specialised tablet running an old version of android. I've had it (IIRC) about 5 years and still receive map and speed camera updates. Mapping is from 'Here'. Adding your own POI data sets is fairly straightforward.
In the past I have slagged off this unit somewhat because it's so slow to boot up, but reading this thread about Garmin updates expiring, I think I owe it an apology.

I also have Organic maps on the Aguri and another Samsung 10" tablet. Routes are quick to set up with Organic but options are limited.

I think I am the only one on here who likes the Aguri unless you do change your mind. I do agree the start up is slow but I am rarely in a hurry so not a problem for me. Saved me on a few low bridges 👍

The 760 LM has stopped getting map updates! :(:(:(

So much for the promise of “free lifetime updates”. Are you sure as pre 2019 sat navs with an LM designation were sold with free lifetime updates.

Garmin do say all models later than 2019 get free updates, not just those with an LM designation.

Very disappointed with Garmin if this is the case. It’s was one of their major sales pitches at the time for the (more expensive and then recently launched) LM models. Especially at a time when TOMTOM had stopped doing free updates so it was a major Garmin sales pitch for their new LM product.

There is a recent July 2022 USA map update for the 760 LMT-D on the Garmin website but as I away from a PC cannot check for a 2022 European update.
I updated my 760 last Friday

I use CoPilot for Caravans/Motorhomes. I bought this many years ago and still get free app and map updates.

I have subscribed to their Live Traffic option.

Third party POI import works well enough but it's a bit of a faff. Imported POIs appear on the base map whilst driving.

The biggest criticism is the interface which looks like it was designed twenty years ago!

If you can live with that it seems to be the best tablet or phone based option.

Thanks, and yes...
Been testing it just now and all good.
Using S4S with it is a doddle and that is now my main source.
All my stopovers in France this year are on S4S.
Need to consider Norway and Sweden for next year.
Directly inputting co ords is fussy.
Yes I use the campervan version

Re Garmin 760

After swapping a few messages with Graham (Wooie1958) I tried my Garmin 760 and found that I could update the maps too so I'm not sure why some can be and some can't.

I'd be lost without it :D

On our latest away break the tomtom packed in. Its a go pro and was pretty pricy at the time some years ago.

We are debating buying a tablet and sim, or another TT probably

TomTom GO Professional 520 5 Inch EU Traffic Truck Sat Nav730/9546

The issue is though that we are often in very remote places so are we better with satellite satnav signal or phone signal we suspect the dearer option is the wiser one.

I don’t know if this is of any value to you but the satnav in my California was so old it wouldn’t take updates so I bought a Garmin Drivecam. I always wondered if a dash cam would be a good idea and this does bott satnav and dash cam l. It also does lane drift warning and collision warning. I’ve only had it a week so can’t speak for any wrinkles but so far so good!

That seems a good idea having a camera built into the sat nav. It'll save a bit of windscreen clutter. Are you able to put the vehicle dimensions into it?

That's exactly the same result I get. Just a thought, we may have already the last map update available on "lifetime" updates. I'll try the reinstall for Express , googling around it seems Garmin "lifetime" equates to 4/5 years max.

Thinking about it, I had to reinstall Garmin Express due to some update or another so maybe that's it.
