hi
I went into halfords today to ask advice on sat nav's

and was advised to buy garmin nuvi 205w at £165
as I don't know a sat nav from a jar of marmalade
anyone got any advice please?

Satnav

Hi Sundown,i have a Navman s70 works well enough has britain and northern europe as standard, got this on a deal with tescos car insurance £100 discount so paid £80 instead of £180.From what i have read i think the Tomtom models are the most user friendly not sure about the Garmin models but you would think having been in the gps systems for walkers and hikers for the last 10 years or so they would be accomplished piece of kit.Just be aware they do sometimes give you false info for example one way streets or some routes that are not suitable for the larger vehicles. Also some models advertise free speed camera alerts but these are usually only for a month or two.But whichever one you choose it is far better than having to stop to look at maps or falling out with the wife.Definitely a must have these wherever you travel, hope this doesn't confuse you more,ANDY.

take a look at reviews on sites like Amazon. I have been looking too and these Garmin machines are looking ok, but there are some downsides that are highlighted in soe of the reviews. When you decide which one to go for then let us know! :)

on comparing different models I'm drawn towards the
TomTom One Explore UK Sat Nav + FREE Carry Case
from halfords at £119 any comments welcome

Don't think you'll go wrong with a Tom Tom, they seem to be the most popular, I have an old Garmin and it's ok but you can't always rely on it and the screen is small, also, it does not accept postcodes when route planning.
I would say ,the best advice so far is to google the product you want ,then read the reviews on it.

maplins have tremendous reductions at the moment on the Navman N20, for uk use only I think they are great, never used one abroad so cannot comment but prices down to around £85 easy to add POI's etc includes traffic cameras and many other useful bits and bobs, love it

hi wildman, the navman n20 looks good for the price,
but I must get one tomorrow  if decide to get one at all
as we are heading south on Monday!

Good advice,Wildman, you wont get any cheaper than that for a decent product, go for it ,Nick, study the manual ,plug it in, set your destination, and go,;), Let us know when you reach Northumberland ,then we'll send out the Tyneside Minders to escort you through:eek::D:p

Enjoy your Hols..

How far south Devon maybe? Do let me know if you do buy one as I still need a copy of disk 1. Have loads of POI files should you need them.

That sounds expensive to me! I have just bought the Garmin nuvi 250 for
£99 from Argos, the wide version I think was only £139. This is the second Garmin 250 I have bought, the first one was erratic so they refunded me, am hoping this one is ok. So far it seems to be!

tomtom one xl europe 1 year on and still ok it is my recomendation

I do note that on the new TomTom site that you download width and height restrictions for free

Satnav Advice

Think i saw an in fridays Daily Express pc world advertising basic Tomtom v3 with free traffic updates via rds addon for £99

hundreds of download poi s and now a weekly camera update i paid just over £16 for the updates for a year i think i could have goten em cheaper but my way of thinking is if you have a mini dont take it ot a rolls royce dealer for servicing so i paid
all sorts motorhome stops /aires /low bridges ect

Halfords are selling Tom Tom for under £100 well £99.99 just then:eek:

I brought a early one £349 ouch 3years ago no probs at all with it:D

that's what I recommend.

yea got caught the same paid £350 ish
suprising how fast the price has come down
same reason as phones i supose
its a got to have for many
i find it usefull sometimes especialy for cameras and some pois fuel stops ect when on a long joirney
but i find a map is still the best for un planed exploring

well, thanks all for your usefull advice on sat navs
but Mrs Sundown doesn't want me to get one at all
I think that she just enjoys shouting directions
from the passenger seat
like she says "who needs competition?" :D :D

Reminds me of my brothers trip down to the south of france last year, his wife was doing the map reading they were trying to get to their next overnight stop seemed to be travelling for hours.Eventually brother pulls up at side of the road to look at map asks wife what road she's been following, this blue winding one here she say's.That's a river says he!(80 miles from where they should have been i'd sack her)

Oh yes, know what you'r talking about (is she the Mrs Bucket type ?- mine is sometime ;)). They simple fear the competion: sexy voice, allways polite, never shouts, allways right -even if wrong and the most important: there is a button to put her off !
