Just wondering if anyone is using the above android as a satnav and if so does it work without eating data?

It will eat data unless you install a dedicated satnav app such as Igo, Tomtom (£38), Waze, Co Pilot Premium (£20) , Navigon (£35), google maps will use data

Thanks for that Tezza. Does it make a good satnav with the right maps?

Waze is Ok as a free one but it relies on other users telling you if there are problems on your route so can still use data and I found it frustrating, I am a tomtom fan so I use that on my 7" Tab4 but CoPilot Premium is good for the money, if I didn't have access to a free tomtom I would have gone with CoPilot

I only use mine alongside my dedicated tomtom satnav, apart from not using truck routes tomtom is pretty good but CoPilot has truck capabilities unfortunately they want £120 for it

I had forgotten to mention that and I use Maps.me, the POI's work well on there as well

Can you select a poi from the ww database and navigate directly to it? Also what's the best way to mount it to the dashboard?

We use Samsung Galaxy Tab4's with Sygic mapping app.

We have two 7" and one 10.1", the Tab4's have inbuilt GPS but no phone connections.

As a back up sat nav I use a free version of Sygic, there are several add ons that you can buy, but they're cheap and I find it works fine as a stand alone unit.

I have a Galaxy Tab 8" which I use as my sole navigation aid (no other sat nav or paper maps).

I use OsmAnd+ as the mapping / route planning / navigation app. There's a free version that's limited to 10 map downloads, or the paid-for version is about 7 quid. All maps are held on the device, so you're not using any data whilst travelling, which is of particular interest when abroad or out of 3G/4G signal.

I have imported all the Wildcamping POI files into it, along with those from CampingCar-Infos, Archies etc., absolutely invaluable.

Full details about how to import the WC POI files is in this sticky thread
