Hi all, what is the law in the UK, regarding carrying additional safe fill gas bottles outside of the designated area in your van. please?

What do you mean about “outside designated area”, internal or external of the vehicle ?

Carrying the bottle it doesn't matter where it is, you can take it by pushbike if you wish

some guidance here, as far as I am aware for the small quantities in a bottle or two there isn't any law

we was not sure if you can carry additional gas inside your van, as not in the gas bottle area.
Their are regulations on carrying gas cylinders in certain circumstances, and their are recommendations.
The regulations on carrying large quantities of gas cylinders and/or for work should not be of concern to the average motorhome user.
Their are regulations on carrying gas cylinders on ferries, you are limited to a maximum of three bottles, and a maximum of 47kg.
As for recommendations, these advise you to carry cylinders in a well ventilated vehicle , and not to smoke in the vehicle, or have naked flames. So one might conclude from that carrying cylinders outside of the locker is not recommended, but we have carried an extra cylinder in the garage a couple of times on extended European trips, although having not come close to using up the 2x13kg bottles in the locker we won't be bothering to do that anymore.

Safety tip from Calor. "Don't carry unnecessary passengers"

Reading their tips, with the double negative, this is confusing as you should NOT do this "Don't carry unnecessary passengers"
Therefore you should carry extra passengers 🤔

And to answer the OP's question is seems limit yourself to 333Kg of gas on board.
