Sad death of mobile phone

From what I can glean, there seems to be a fairly common problem with certain models including both versions of the Samsung Wave relating to the micro-USB port. The phones have a habit of erratically switching into USB mode when not connected to anything and users joke they appear to be charging wirelessly from the sky. When this happens, the battery is rapidly depleted, some functions become unavailable, the phone becomes unreliable/unusable and also has a habit of switching off (then sometimes won't restart until plugged into a mains charger) or completely locks and the software needs reinstalling at a service centre.

It's been reported on Samsung's own user forum, the BADA forums and shown on YouTube videos.

Over the last five months, I've had to take mine into repair centres which have been unable to repair hardware issues so they've forwarded it to Samsung who have simply returned it to them unrepaired 28 days later. Buymobilephones.net are good in that they answer the phone and respond to emails but, as retailer, they should be taking some responsibility and/or liaising with Samsung to expedite a warranty repair/replacement. No assistance has been forthcoming and as Samsung have been negligent in failing to repair the phone, which is back in their possession once again, I've been left with no alternative other than to sue both as joint defendents.

Thank you for that. What you say though may imply that this may be restricted to just one version. Is this the case? It would be useful for those considering buying say, a Galaxy SII, to know that this does not afflict all models. Mine has been fine by the way.

It may be just the Wave models but I have seen references to problems with other models. It's probably worth looking through the Samsung user forums to see if any faults have been reported with the Galaxy SII. I have friends with Galaxy phones (not sure which versions) and, so far, they've been fine and they've been very impressed with their performance, and especially the camera.

If you have any concerns, you could always contact an independent phone service centre and ask if many of a specific model are returned for repair. This can sometimes give more insight...

I hope yours will continue to work as it should because, based on my experience, when things go wrong Samsung's customer service has been next to non-existent.

I love the screen, both size and brightness on my galaxy SII.
First smartphone I've had, battery life not good, but can be expected due to the processing power and large screen. However, if needed, turn off all the bells and whistle's then battery life aint bad if required.
It's now replaced my netbook when touring, much more conveniant. Some great apps available, gonna look into copilot.
If I know I'll need a phone for emergencies, like going on a hike or something I take a little old Nokia.
Bought mine from Carphone Warehouse, therefore it's an unlocked version without all the network providers bloat-ware on it.

I bought an extra battery on eBay. It's a slightly larger capacity than the supplied one and it was only about £7. I swap them occasionally to make sure that both get used and the cheap one has been absolutely fine. I go to London occasionally for a whole day where I may use it quite a bit and it stops me worrying about my battery going. I think that the iPhone's battery isn't removable, which can't be good.
