rutland water

Hi can anyone tell me a good spot near rutland water for parking in the winter time so we can bike round the water use rutland campsite in season but closed in winter thanks stubby
 
Rutland Caravan and Camping site is open all year round but is a bit expensive, however, they also own a small CL next to the pub in the Village of Greetham - about £8 per night, may be worth checking out. I think the pub is called The Plough.
 
my daughter lives at edith weston on the south side of rutland water, near there just outside the village of manton there is a lovely C S with views over the water called i think the pheasants roost was about £12 a night when i checked last year for some friends, but good organic butchers on the farm and right on the cycle trail where it leaves the water and comes onto the road about 1/2ml one way to a pub and about a mile in the opposite direction

I'm afraid this one is only open April - September
 
you could always try lyndon top though primarily a rally site , [got about 5 rally fields right on the shore of the res could cope with about 750 vans at a fiver a night one for the future] will take individual vans no electric etc but hard enough standings
 
This is farmers field who charges £6 a night, can't remember the name.

Not sure it will be possible if the weathers wet.

Its a smashing ride. I have done it many times.

Try the Sykes lane entrance from Empingham. You can park just outside the barrier in a small van. There are always dog walkers parked there and the odd campervan. How big are you.

Hi tbear 21 foot mate i use the edith weston campsite in season love this ride but iv only been in summer looking for some good winter rides cheers mate will give it a go if anyone has any good rides for winter please post here thanks stubby

If you are in the area there are shorter ones around Eyebrook Res starting at Lyddington. Its short but has a long hill climb so still gives you a workout and then going a bit further south, there's Grafham Water.

If I can I will do Rutland this weekend and scout it for you.

054.jpgDon't try risking overnight on any of the car parks around Rutland Water, there are wardens 24hrs there and they will move you on. They are environment agency employees and are very keen to stop anyone from staying after time. Here's the last photo taken there before being thrown out.

possibly nearer to you is carsington water on the edge of the peak district smaller circuit but definitley harder going plenty of camping near the visitor center £5/10 a night, the knockerdown pub is my favourite

Sorry mate but I gave you bad info. The sykes lane gate has a permit holders only sign on it now. I would stay in Stamford, just as you cross the A1 theres an estate. I am sure if you pull up late you will find a good spot to wild for the night.

The Rutland campsite by the sailing club was still open and near full up.

You could try the Peterborough Green Wheel if you fancy a long one. Its about 40 miles the way I did it last. Maps from local bike shops and tourist office for about £2.00 I think.
