Today I took both ventilators off the fridge and was a bit shocked at how much rust was on the pipes, am a bit hesitant to wire brush or rub down as they don’t look very substantial. So just wondering if a good coat of oil brushed on would help ?.
You'll be OK, the pipes are thick and won't rupture. Use some 1" wide emery cloth to get round the back, and paint with Hammerite smooth.I got a lot of rust off when I did mine and it has worked just fine since then, I can keep ice creams in the freezer with no problems. Whileyou are in there, remove the gas burner / ignition assembly and either renew it or give it a good seeing-to. You may well find rust dust in there. You should end up with a nice blue flame.

If you don't think the pipes could stand up to a rub down or wire brush, then you should really check by giving them a rub down or wire brush, as if they would fail on that, they need scrapping now!
