Roaming in the EU

I know this topic has been done endlessly, but the rules and offers from providers keep changing. I need a data sim that will give me 100GB a month in France (for three months). I've used Popit in the past but I'm not sure that they still do 100GB roaming. I used Tiekom last time I went, but they only seem to now offer 50GB outside Spain. I don't really want to change my mobile provider or take out a new contract: I'm currently with Lebara which is excellent and cheap, but they only offer 30GB. I'd prefer to not use an eSim because of phone battery drain, although it is an option.

Have people successfully used a French sim, and if so was it easy to buy and activate? Any other suggestions?

Thanks

This is the one you want for France. Available from E. Leclerc stores (the larger ones generally). Used it for three months in France last summer. We had one each. Cheap as chips and on the SFR network with great coverage.

You will need to give them a French address possibly, Any campsite or just about any address will do and you will need ID (Passport).

No need for a French address. You do need a photo identity document and proof of address; a UK driving licence is ideal as it does both.

They do sometimes ask for a French address. They asked us. I had one ready on my phone but lost it when asked so I literally googled a local campsite and gave them that.

We had a bit of a carry on as well as there seemed to be some confusion over porting numbers which of course I didn't want to do.

My EE works for me. As long as I remember to select “roaming “ on my handset.
Of course I had to change UK suppliers from 3 to EE. That could present an issue for you
Unlimited 4g

I forget where you bought yours. I have bought on numerous occasions over several years, always close to a Channel port, and never encountered any issues; no request for a French address and no offer to port my number. :)

Just south of Luxembourg. E. Leclerc Hyper. I have read a few accounts on the forums where people have been asked for an address but its no big deal. The whole process took an age at the checkout but I think thats unusual.

As the Leclerc one is not a purely data only sim, will it work in a router?

I'm pretty sure it does. We just used them as hotspots in our phones and also to keep in touch, use the internet out and about etc. I think there was an EU law passed some time ago that said phone sims had to work in any device.

I got one last year, I put it in my spare phone, Liz and I used it as the hotspot for both our phones, the laptop and both tablets, it's a no brainer.

That's really helpful. Thanks for all your responses. It does look like Reglo is the way to go. We do use a 4G router though, so it would be good to know if anyone has used it in a router?

As said up thread. People have used them in MiFi units, routers etc. The thing to do is to activate it in a phone first then it should work.

Yes, they ask for an address, but a UK address is perfectly acceptable. They also need to see ID. A UK passport does not include an address, but the photocard driving licence has everything that they require and it saves you spelling out a UK address to them, they can just transcribe it.

Are you sure? The general opinion on the forums is it has to be a French address.

We've used Reglo sims for the last two years, not asked for an address but they may well have copied it off the driving licence. Worked well in our van mifi, but definitely worth activating it a phone first. 👍

I am absolutely sure that ever since I first bought a Réglo Mobile SIM some years ago, I have never supplied any address other than my UK home address and this has never been a problem. I normally buy two each year (one for each trip). It is not impossible that some other French telecoms providers require an address in France.
