Roadside breakdown insurance for France

I'm off in my 1996 bongo in two weeks and quotes I've been getting are very high. I'm thinking of winging it as I'm confident my van can make to the dordogne and back. What are your thoughts? Is it worth the gamble?
Thank you for your feedback and any info on reasonably priced breakdown insurers
 
Aib on my van £67,its up to you but if involved in crash /breakdown you have to think because of bongo age is it worth bringing home,hard call but you should be ok.

Not many companies cover vehicles over 16 years old, the AA I think does, as a former bongo owner myself, I would make sure you are fitted with a low coolant alarm, and a TM temperature sensor, and give all the coolant hoses a good check over before departure, wonderful little campers, however the cooling systems can be quite suspect due to the amount of 20 year old hoses that may be still fitted to your motorhome, however it's a real pity they don't make them any more, they far better and more fun to drive than any VW or motorhome which are basically just vans compared to driving a bongo.
It may be cheaper to get a once over and thorough check at a reputable bongo specialists before you depart, and just get overseas insurance without the breakdown cover.

One year uk and Euro breakdown cover. Cost me £65 for a 20 year old Saab.


Having broken down in Germany last year in the motorhome I used up all of the £2500 claim limit in repatriation costs via Comfort Insurance (£419 insurance AND Euro breakdown cover)

The problem is not just the age of the bongo, it's a grey import from Japan and as a result many insurance companies won't even cover them for collision insurance never mind breakdown, fortunately I got full cover with the caravan club as it was fully converted, but many people still have them as 8 seater people carriers and AIB, caravan club, etc won't touch them.

I should have asked the AA first... They gave me roadside assistance for £137. Which is a relief.

One point not mentioned is that if you breakdown on a French Peage, because they are privately owned, you can only use their recovery service and you will have to pay for it.

I've just had a quote for motorhome Insurance on a autotrail chieftain £40000 value for £540 fully comp fully European 365 days a year breakdown cover in with that but I think she mentioned vehicle needed to be under 20 years old ' and that was with Safeguard and the AA
 
Euro breakdown cover

ADAC costs me less that £100 per year,

Covers the driver rather than the vehicle.

Similar service & coverage to the AA etc.

All european countries (inc UK).

No vehicle age limits.
