reverse polarity problem

nothing trips

there is a red warning light comes on on the control panel saying reverse polarity error
 
Aaaaaaaa. This is normal. I assume you have full use of mains power in MH
 
well no, at least i dont think so, the red warning light kindo freaked me out and i pulled the plug on the genny toot sweet
 
***** I am not nit picking Shortcircuit seems to be in agreement RP is not an issue unless you have a faulty appliance, then there is a potential issue.

I understand electics at the basic level, We have brand new vans that have two sockets RP which I have to change...

In respect of the OP,s dilemma now I am lost so I will keep quiet and look forward to the answer.

I also understand basic electrics and we are in full agreement about this situation, I think it a case of needing to be there to sort it out. Probably very simple.

Don't worry. I am not going out of my depth here but it may well be to do with "earthing" your generator by use of an earth spike and doing the same with the MH earth so they are both at the same potential. Never seen it done.
 
hi shortcircuit, apart from earthing genny and mh with spikes are you saying i could have ignored the warning light and it would have worked anyway

But That doesnt detract if he has a dodgy appliance DANGEROUS in respect of Reverse Polarity...potentially not that I know very much just 300 mobile homes to take care of with Reverse polarity issues .

NO NO NO. In a "healthy" electrical installation a "dodgy appliance" presents no problem as the RCD will trip irrespective of reversed polarity. The RCD measures current in an out and if out of balance trips so polarity does not matter. I stand to be corrected here but newer RCD are more discriminating in this respect
 
hi *****, when mains is plugged in there is a light comes on to tell me i am on mains power, when i plugged in the genny this light never came on just a big red warning light and i unplugged the genny very quickly never actually plugged anything into a socket to check

Reading around it seems that the Honda genny has a "floating" supply ie neither pole of the generator is connected to earth.

In "Normal" power as supplied to your home, one of the terminals of a generator is connected to earth at the power station, this becomes the Neutral and the other lead the live as all voltages are with respect to earth. Hence if you use your multimeter on AC volts and measure between live- neutral you get about 240v, measure live to earth and you should get about the same, measure neutral earth and you should get only a few volts.

Because the reverse polarity detector isn't seeing a connection between the neutral and earth it thinks that there is a fault and switches off the supply.

How to get over this??

You've probably made a 13A to 16A fly lead to connect from your genny to van. If you connect the earth and neutral together in the plug your problem should vanish as the system should now recognise the potential between all three wires.

It's what the boat people are doing.

As your van is not referenced to earth, you won't have an issue.

PS. Label the "Modified cable as Genny only"

you are spot on *****. i have put earth and neutral together i have done it on
a spair cable.you could even wire it in the genny if you want good luck works on my genny
honda 1kw.
