reverse polarity problem

Hi guys, i bought a little honda suitcase 1Kw generator for my 2002 bessacar 425 it worked perfectly well for over a year

This year I bought a 2009 bessacarr 560 and when i plug the genny into this i get a red light on the control panel saying reverse polarity warning and disconnects the genny

i dont quite understand 'reverse polarity' as the genny outputs ac

i see from the manual there is a reverse polarity module in the motorhome. i cant help feeling that its maybe being a bit over sensitive, is there some way to bypass it

cheers

Hi i think you will find its something to do with how the earth circuit from the van is wired to the output from the genny ,but somone will confirm soon ,hope its a simple fix

cheers tried reversing the live and neutral, just the same

i read somewhere i need to earth the genny with a big spike in the ground but there must be an easier way surely

reverse polarity is a pain in the backside and something I have experienced all season

in simple terms the continentals will wire neutral : live any which way which causes issues ..

In answer to your situation , I would make a fly lead between genny and motorhome with live and neutral reversed ...this will cure your situation.

hi channa, i have an adaptor for the motorhome lead to a 13 amp plug which fits in the genny

tried reversing the live / neutral leads, no joy

FORGET IT, FORGET IT, FORGET IT, Unless you intend to work on your electrics with the generator running you have no problems.

Sorry I thought I had editted. What disconnects as this is new to me?

hi shortcircuit, not sure what you mean, can you elaborate

when i plug the genny into the van i get the warning light on the control panel i dont get any power from the genny, its like disconnected

I would agree other than if he is unknowingfully using a faulty appliance?

then RP can be an issue ? and a deadly one at that ?

sorry were a bit out of sync here

i connect the genny to the van but the control panel does not let the power through

sorry i'm not explaining it very well

hi *****, same lead but with a convertor to 13amp plug which fits in the genny

the genny works cos i had to plug the wifes hairdryer / straightners directly into it

otherwise i would have been in deep trouble

You need first to establish that you have an output from your geni. Can you plug an appliance in, hair dryer, and check that it operates. If not check breaker has not tripped.

If correct, can you plug your MH in using your normal hookup cable and use the same hair drier to check that the sockets in the MH are working. If not check breakers are all on in MH.

If above OK plug geni into MH and check again.

In a healthy electrical circuit reverse polarity is of no danger unless you wish to tamper with live electrics, which is no recommended.

fuse ok, leads ok, checked them out with a multimeter

got a feeling its an earthing problem

i was hoping there might be some easy way of bypassing the reverse polarity detector module

***** re read the thread I am well aware that the OP has tried a fly lead .. live neutral reversal would make me think an earthing problem too

But That doesnt detract if he has a dodgy appliance DANGEROUS in respect of Reverse Polarity...potentially not that I know very much just 300 mobile homes to take care of with Reverse polarity issues .
now and again which for some reason my eployers insist I address

hi shortcircuit, the problem is the control panel shuts of the power from the genny, so even though it shouldnt be a problem the reverse polarity detector thinks it is

It now suggest that there is a problem within your MH. Are you saying it only shuts off when the geni is connected or is it the same with the mains hookup?

its fine when its on mains hook up

its just when i plug it into the genny

well as i said there is a reverse polarity detector on it

i need to find some way of shutting it off
