Renewing license at 70

Hi guys

I think I have seen this question before but cannot find it again.

The big 70 looms on the horizon at the end of the year (feeling miserable about it). So I need to renew my license to include being able to drive our 5 1/2 ton van, which is currently included in the list. The DVLA site seems to infer I can renew online but I doubt they mean for anything over 3 1/2 tons.

Some of you guys will undoubtedly have gone through this process so your advice would be very welcome please - thanks.

I am in the middle of this at the moment. All the info and form you need are available through the DVLA website. You will need a doctors and opticians certificate, and time. My application was sent early March and I will go for my exercise ecg next Monday and I expect I might get a licence in a month after that if I am lucky.

ps No you can not do this on line!

Got mine in less than a week, no issues but my camper is only 2.2t

I got mine in under a week, but mine too is a mere 3 tonnes and I did it all on line. I believe that heavier ones require a doctors certificate of fitness and around here it costs about £75

So would I if I had not been retaining my right to drive vehicles up to 7.5 tonnes as the OP wishes to do. It seems that it is OK for old farts to keel over driving a light vehicle and kill people but it is a problem with heavier vehicles.

how far in advance can you apply?

Four months before your license is due to expire. Mine expires at the end of March next year and I have already contacted an agency to fix up a date in January but have been told that they don't get availability from doctors until the month before. I was advised to e-mail them in early December. They claim to be able to fix up a medical within 24 hours - we'll see if that is true then!

Motorhome Medical | DVLA D4 Renew Entitlements This is the website I used but there are plenty of others - I chose this one because it has a centre which is very convenient for me.

Hi flower3bird,

I done mine at the end of April for birthday in June,DVLA offer on line renewal if you want to drop your C1 for 7.5 tons free but if you want to keep it you will have to get a form from DVLA or a main post office.I took the form to my doctor with a eye test form filled in by Optician (i was getting new glasses at the time) and they filled the form in free.
The Medical at the doctors cost me £140.00 cash It was a lot of money but they did pick up on a couple of things that i need further treatment for so maybe a result for me or not.
After all forms filled and sent recorded delivery they took about a week but remember you do it all over again in three years time.

Have downloaded the D4 and sent for the D2. Mine is not due till December but because I am in the UK so infrequently I was thinking about doing the medical when I am back in a couple of weeks time for a week. However I then wondered if they wouldn't accept it if done so far in advance !

The medical can be done by a doctor abroad. If you have it done anywhere else, but at your own doctor, it can cause delays as DVLA will write to your own doctor for medical history confirmation.

I have just gone through the process for the second time at 73. The doctor thought he detected a slight heart murmur, however the echo scan came back "satisfactory, no further action required". I was asymptomatic but he still put it on my forms.

I have voluntary yearly eye tests so know that I am OK. I think all drivers should have to have medicals/opticians checks rather than self certification, no matter the size of vehicle they drive.

Following this thread with interest. John is 70 beginning August so that is why we are heading back at end of the month.
