Morning all, At the moment my van is on a sorn and uninsured as I won't be using it until April. When I do start using it I'll tax and insure it again. My question is when I take it off the road again and sorn it will I get a refund the on unused tax and insurance. It will probably be off the road from November until end of March.

Wherever your van is parked is it wise to leave it uninsured

Don't ask us, speak to your insurers.

Tell them what you want to do and ask what your options are. They may offer a refund, but that could cost you your discounts when you reinsure as you have cancelled the policy and return as a "new" customer. They may offer a lower cost "off road" policy, or you may even be better off cancelling, but only your own insurers can give you the details for your policy and circumstances.

I have a car that is long term sorn & I transferred the insurance (and its no-claims) to another vehicle, I have another car that is sorn part of the year and the best bet for that is to keep it insured all year on a classic policy. It all depends on your insurer and what you want to achieve.

I was under the impression that it had to be insured even if sorned. Good to know I was wrong then! :)

I agree, I believe the Law was changed to ensure a vehicle had at least 3rd Party Insurance while sorned.

I know that for cars, some Insurance Companies happily change your Policy to 3rd party when not in use and even reduce the premium for that period. As far as I know, no Motorhome insurers do this but I may be wrong.

I believe you are quite wrong. Can you point to a single reliable link that supports your statement?

If the car is taxed, it must be insured, even if not used on the road, but if it is SORN'd you do NOT need to insure it, altho if it happens to burn out or have a tree fall on it then you lose out.

I have checked several links & they all say, as I did originally, that you do NOT need to insure cars that are SORN'd. I have checked this because I have an uninsured SORN'd car & a scooter.

"If you don't intend to take your car onto the road, you'll need to apply for a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN).

This officially declares the vehicle as 'off-road', meaning it won't need to be insured or taxed. Without SORN, you'll need to pay for tax and car insurance – even if the vehicle's sitting on a driveway or in a garage."

Quote above taken from the Churchill Insurance web site, but there are dozens of others that say the same. What do you have that says otherwise?

So I was wrong ... no need to get on your high horse kiddo.

I said "I believe" in my post, so there always was an element of doubt in my statement.

Better to say nowt on this forum I think.

That element of doubt reminded me of the difference between faith and knowledge. The father 'believes' that the child is his: the mother 'knows' that the child is hers!

I accept your gracious apology for doubting me in the first place :raofl:

Beware

We did not renew our Smart Car insurance in September 2012 as we SORNed it and left it on our daughters drive (behind gates) while we toured France, Spain and Portugal for the winter.

The premium was already sky high, because we full time in the motorhome. On return last spring (2013) we phoned to renew the insurance to renew the VED. The quote received, was double the premium requested in September 2012.

Nothing had changed, just we had cancelled the insurance instead of renewing it. This was with Comfort. We contacted AVIVA (who were the actual insurers) direct instead of through the brokers and got insurance for half of the quote for renewal in September 2012.

This reminded me of something I heard years ago, where something like 30% of kids are born with their 'father', not really being so, but being unaware of it due to mother having had an affair. A close relative had a few kids with married women, who were then brought up by the womens husband, who were left in the dark.
