I want to install the co pilot to an 8 inch tablet but the app I found is a car one the Co pilot rv specific is £119.
Would the one you have warn us of low bridges and narrow roads?

No it doesn't,it has an RV mode but all that does is recalculate your ETA,there is no facility to input vehicle dimensions or warn of low bridges, narrow roads unless you pay for the expensive truck version.I've never needed that facility as my van is 7m x 3m,my theory is if white van man can get through then so can I.

Just put the Rain Alarm app in the phone. It looks Ok. It assures me that there's a small rain system passing about 17 miles to our north.

Accuweather and the GISmeteo sites tell me that winds are norwesterlies and rain is 60% certain to arrive after 1800.

So why is the south wind blowing drizzle against my windows?

They are in an, " inability to distinguish their rectum from their humerus ", situation !

I also use microsoft autoroutes on a 15''laptop for planning routes when in the truck of an evening.I have numerous poi on it and it's an excellent mapping programme, the best in my opinion. It's a shame that microsoft have discontinued it and withdrawn support as of last year but it is still working well and long may it continue. It's handy to get the coordinates of the next destination(s) from A/R and input them into copilot on the smartphone, really easy and intuitive, you can even plan an itinerary using copilot

I have upgraded the stereo head unit in the van so the smartphone is connected to it via bluetooth, then the lovely Emily instructs me through the stereo speakers,no problem hearing her lovely seductive voice although she is a bit more classy than that tomtom scrubber Jane.If I get a phone call I answer it and it's hands free, overrides the satnav and is nice and clear.

I don't think you have given this system a proper test Barry with your I phone4 small screen and lack of volume,at the risk of repeating myself I find copilot is superior to any stand alone satnav.I drove to Spain last year with 3 different satnav systems working as a test-Autoroutes 2013 used in conjunction with a GPS dongle(loaded on a 10''samsung netbook),a tomtom 5000 and copilot loaded on a samsung S4 smartphone.Copilot won hands down, the routing and re routing when lost was much quicker, instructions clearer, quicker to lock onto the GPS signal and generally more user friendly, intuitive and lots more adjustable parameters.

With the correct equipment installed Copilot works extremely well in practice but if you're happy with your current system then why change.

No I probably havent tested it properly with my current phone and set up. As for connecting it to the stereo via bluetooth well all my vehicles are so old I think there may even be an 8 track in my Ancient Golf. :D

I tell you what would be blooming useful though. Getting the sat nav app to work in my pocket via headphones for the scooter. At the moment I either stick the big and newer tomtom in my pocket in which case you can hardly hear it or I stick an ancient TomTom 1 in there which has a headphone socket. This works as long as the battery lasts which is not long and the charger is iffy and the maps are out of date.

I know you can get mounts for them but I dont want to look at the screen, just want loud clear instructions. That might be worth investigating.

You can probably download ebooks & audio books from your local library.

Also:

Canal and river places to visit (buy a British waterways canal key from ebay)

That would work with your iphone Barry, with some headphones connected to the phone you could get the spoken instructions whilst on the scooter. There is a motorcycle option in the copilot settings,it's also possible in settings to choose how long before the manoeuvre you get the spoken instructions so it can be tailored to your personal preference. It would cost £29.99 for the W. Europe map with free lifetime updates.Another bonus is you have a back up sat nav if ever the tomtom packs in.

Following on from Barryd's comments about screen size, we used an HP Ipaq PDA with TomTom Navigator5 for many years, but last year I bought a Samsung Galaxy Tab4 in 7" and 10" versions.

The 7" sits on our cupholder in the Discovery, on a recent trip to Kendal in a hire van it sat very nicely on the centre of the dash.

Rita took a shot of it from my viewpoint:

We use Sygic on both tablets, which are both fitted with GPS and Wifi, but not cellular connections.
