I been looking at the Fiamma rear storage boxes, the ones that fit on a bike rack but at £400+ I won't be buying one of Those!
So I'm looking for ideas people might have adopted to make there Own?
Cheers all.

if weight isnt an issue get one welded up out of aluminium plate, you can have it the size that suits you best and it will be more secure than a plastic box (if you are the sort of person worried about such things)

price wise though it might be close to the cost of a Fiamma

Or you could take a look at bags, tow-ball mounted luggage, boxes, luggage, towbar, clam-shell bag, spare wheel carrier,spare-wheel,spare-wheel rack, carrier, holiday luggage, waterproof bag, toeball, tow-ball, towball, ford, fiesta, citroen, c2, tow-bracket, small car,

The towball mounted Box

A robust plastic box mounted on your tow-ball. Tilts down to allow access to the boot.

185 litres - internal size L 65 x W 41 x H 48 cm, external L 85 x W 61 x H 59 cm Wt 9Kg. Max 60Kg load

Box has 4 point detachable lid with moulded in padlock eyes.

Box-rak bargain £149inc VAT complete

OR

New Tough Duty Big-box

4ft X 2ft X 2ft (1150x590x600) 450 litres. Made of the toughest plastic we could find (what they use to protect digger windows from vandals) with straps and a lockable catch - both secure and waterproof. It has a deep sided removable lid that can accommodate extra volume. Made to our own design - you won't find a tougher or bigger box. Fits to G3 base-rak with a carrying weight limit of 100kg.This tilts down to give access to the boot area. (£240)

from the same people -

We now have a new lightweight plastic box available to fit to the base-rak. Our new plastic box gives a convenient enclosed load carrier at the sensible price of £79 including a £10 delivery charge. 185 litres - internal size L 650 x W 410 x H 485mm, external L 850 x W 610 x H 590mm and 7Kg, it is tough enough for most jobs including carrying the holiday luggage. Although not fully waterproof, with the lid strapped down it will stand up to most weather conditions and it can be used as a fixed store when not in transit. It has a fitment to take a padlock for security. It comes with a kit to clamp it onto the base.

Aluminium Box

We have a high quality box using 2mm Aluminium checker plate. The Aluminium Box sells for £189

The box is :-

1230 x 380 x 380 mm overall dimensions
Internal 1215 x 365 deep x 375 high. Small lip around top reduces opening slightly
Opening 1188 x 337 mm Weighs 11kg

It is fitted with a robust lock Comes with two keys, two spring loaded handles, and chain supported lid.
If it is fitted as close to the car as possible it leaves space on the rack for one bike rack.

I did all this leg work a couple of years ago but for me the sticking point was the cost of a towbar - which isnt an issue for you

I’m considering fitting a towbar, Bak-Rak and a Solent lockable, weatherproof heavy duty plastic box.
Weight wise double capacity versus a Fiamma box, only limit is your nose weight. No reason why you couldn’t fit one on your Fiamma cycle rack and only around £100.00 - £130.00.

A point of caution to consider is insurance companies.

Even on my private car they consider fitting a towbar to be a modification to the vehicle and the car has a towbar.

Now you fully well know that insurance companies are cautious people substantially equipped to take money but,

they do not like paying money out themselves.

Any excuse might cause friction.

That really IS a good point, & Easy overlook, & an EASIER Get out clause!

I have had a tow bar on every car that I have owned, always told the insurance company but its never made a difference.

I used a cheap B&Q garden storage box, when I assembled it I glued all the joints to help stiffen it up,then put ply inside where I bolted it to the bike rack,I got it on offer for £20 but I expect you'd get one for under 50.

Thanks, I think I might go with the solent plastics one, it's only for storing a couple of roll up memory foam mattress in,
Ive had a measure and they should fit, you know how we are all pushed for storage space, at least they will be out of the way when we are travelling and want to stop for lunch etc.
Thanks all for the input, good point about the insurance bty.
