RANT Time. sorry.
I like most on here prefer to wild camp (and now I know why)

I'm meeting a mate next month for a walking weekend in the hills around Keswick....
As he's stopping in a town centre hotel we will be eating and drinking (not much) on the Friday and Saturday nights, it makes sense that I stop nearby as well

So I thought I'd try on line and see how much a pitch would be at the Keswick camping and caravaning club site in the town.

Only to be told on line that

"We’re sorry, we cannot find a pitch that matches your search
We are unable to find a pitch for the criteria you entered, please try a different arrival date and/or number of nights, using the ‘Change holiday details’ link at the top of the page.

Minimum stay of 3 nights required
"

Nice to be able to turn money away in February eh? :rolleyes2::rolleyes2:

hi
it will probably be fully booked. last year i was at keswick i asked at the site
they said they were fully booked for months ahead.
you will have to wild camp in a car park near the hotel.

This I'll aim for here and sod them,

Google Maps

It's only 15mins to and from the town centre on foot and free

Thats what I was going to suggest. You could always get a cab back if you get too pished. I think you used to be able to park at the Rugby club but not sure now.

That's were we always stop when we visit Keswick, it's only a short walk to town.

Wasn't there a thread not so long ago saying that that place was full most of the time with full timers, with unhappy locals. We used to stay at a site just down the road in Braithwaite called Scotgate, no idea what they charge now as it's much more commercial now than when we last used it but it seems they now have another site nearby called Braithwaite Bridges
Scotgate Holiday Park Gallery, Keswick Camping, Caravans, Holiday Chalets, Holiday Lodges, Derwent Water, Lake District, Cumbria, Scotgate, Lake District Campsite, Camping, Touring Caravan and Luxury Chalet Holiday Park

I thought the Council had put restrictions on there? Anybody stayed there recently?

Keswick C&CC

Hi John, we had the same issue with trying to book in November. Seems that phone message is never taken off, however we just turned up, earlyish, about 1.30pm/2.00pm, sat in a queue for a short while slowly edging up to the gates as the Wardens dealt with the vans in front. We were given a pitch for one night as we requested, no problem. It's worth noting that this site is one of the busiest, if not thee busiest in the UK hence the no nonsense recorded message and online booking setup. But there's no doubt they could be managing their booking systems far far better.

We went there last year ( first and definitely last time ) with our daughter and son-in-law so they could try out their new caravan.

You`re not missing anything, the camp commandant is ex-military and a first class, grade A, obsessive nob :mad2:

He marches around the site, all he`s missing is a Swagger Stick and thinks he`s still ordering the young privates / boys about.

There are enough orders / commands printed on signs everywhere around the site to destroy an Amazonian rain forest.

I`ve no idea what the attraction is because the site was packed solid, maybe they all go there to be abused and humilitated.

There are two C&CC sites on the same road about 100yds apart. You could try the other one. I have to say I've never had a problem, but on reflection I'm only ever there during the week when the restriction doesn't apply.

A rant in time !

Saves nine !
Oh sorry wrong idiom.

Hope you find somewhere suitable.

May have something to do with the ANNUAL STAMPEDE for pitches. Booking started 6th December 2017. Don't know why they do it it loads of pitches are booked and then canceled at the last minute because the weather is rubbish. Be fairer just to have an on going booking system with site pitches available on a rolling basis.

We meet one guy who always books the same weeks year in year out and never goes anywhere else. Well each to his own.

I was told the other year that they were rolling out MH service points to make it easier to dump grey water etc this will be done over the next 20 years :lol-053:

Contact the hotel. Tell them that the campsite is full, your mate is staying with them.
You both want to eat and drink and, without having to drive.
Ask them if they could let you overnight in your fully self contained van. Mention how you've heard that their full English breakfast is fantastic.. Blah blah .
Costs nowt to ask and you can spend the campsite fees on high living.

Ahh, the FRIENDLY CLUB, dont think soooo :mad2::mad2::mad2:

The minimum booking restrictions are applied to all online bookings by the automated booking system. However, I have nearly always been able to find a pitch for a single night or nights less than the minimum booking restriction either by phoning sites direct or just turning up on spec, unless the site is fully booked. Obviously usual caveats apply, i.e. mentioning to the warden what you think of the club and the system is hardly going to elicit a sympathetic response, whereas politeness, civility and a bit of flirtiness (in the social rather than the sexual sense of the word - i.e. building a rapport ) often yields desired results.

Must say , from comments here , site doesn't appeal too much . Though when minimum number of nights is a condition of booking there is normally a good commercial reason for it .
The advice re talking to your mates hotel makes sense , its worked for me in the past

The only reason we stay members of the said club is for their T.H.S. ( Temporary Holiday Sites ) that they run around the UK which are good value.

The CS`s ( Certificated Site`s ) are getting expensive and catching the club sites up fast price wise so we don`t bother with them either.

We have stayed at the site in the past, this was February, not many pitches left.It is a good spot, never noticed anyone patrolling the site!
