Sorry to bring up caravans, but I thought this may be the best place to ask. I am considering getting a small teardrop caravan and keeping it in the UK at my sisters house. What is the deal with them - assume no MOT? but what about insurance? I have tried googling and getting conflicting info....

:dance: Thank you!

Teardrops, as you know are basically a bed in a trailer, with a small galley usually used from the outside.

If you want another option, you may want to consider a rooftop tent. I had one a few years back and it was really comfortable and warm. I slept near Loch Lomond at -12 and was absolutely fine.

Other advantages are that you won't need to tow, you could keep it at home in the IOM and it wouldn't make any difference to your MPG or fares on the ferry. You can also leave the bed permanently made up and all you have to do is flip the catches and it springs open, then attach the ladder.

There are many variations available, this is the type I had;

Columbus Variant – Autohome US

I put it on top of a small van (Citroen Dispatch) in which I had room for a portaloo and galley unit. Very economical camping.

just to clarifi the third party insurance risk of damaging somebody or something else is covered by the towing vehicles insurance. however you may wish to insure for theft or if you damage it.
