question re demountable as claasification as m home maybe a good question for vwalan

hi all
hope so one could give me sum feedback re this

im looking for sumthing bigger than my landrover for using in eurpoe mainly spain. im still going to use my landrover pic below in uk for weekends etc

View attachment 17129

i plan to spend a month at a time over their in between flying back for work commitments . so 0ne month in southern Spain 2 weeks in uk etc etc

anyway ive like the the idea of a demountable camper but having looked at the size of demount able i ca get on a pick up even a 130 landrover it wont be big enough or carry the weight if i plan to wildcamp all the time i.e gas water batteries etc.

example of demountable on a pick up below

i then started looking a 3.5 tonne picks up such as transits as that way the tax insurnace for a commercial is still ok , but again with a larger demountbale the size is just abut ok but the payload is low

example of larger demountable on 3.5 tonne transit

then i thought about a 5 tonne to 6 tonne pick like this with a demountable on top to sole the weight problem and have a bike rack behind

such as this

problem is it becomes a vehicle over 3.5 tone with alot more expanse of taxing mot and an awful lot more on insurnace.

so having looked at the info on how to turn a vehicle into a m home what would be the issuies with just apply for the 5-7 tonne pcommercial chassis and dmounatble as one unit by bolting it down as part of the vehicleas appose to straps and being part of the vehcles load as a demountbale.

for eample are the following vehicles classed and insured as m homes or commercials

thoughts welcome

On one hand it must be nice to have plenty of space and extra carrying capacity, but there's a lot to be said for keeping to normal panel van size. Plenty of people go on extended trips in LR's etc. You don't need a years supply of water and gas, ;) .

What is the load capacity of those demountable LR's ?

hi mark
well i surpose it depends on the demontable a 110 landrover has give or take a carrying campacity of 980kg a 130 has i belive closer to 1300kg a suntreker wthout stuff is around 500 ive been told the artic fox more like 1500kg before u put stuff in it, this is why im thing of a 8-7 tonne chassis like this to put a decent sizes the demountable on

as i dont wont to use camp sites and wildcamp and stelth camp i was looking at just an xlwb transit jumbo or sprinter size, then just add a side window limo glass . it all comes down to choice and room ive found tho the more room i have the more room i want but my landrover ticks every box im thinking perhaps my landrover with a sankey trailer but will of course lose a bit of mobility it havng a trailer , alsosince i did my landrover top alot f ppl having shown an intrest and i get alot of looks which kind of defeats the element of stealth its a no win thing a large demountable i feel with them not being very comman will attrac attention too.

normally its the perkins phaser unit out of the dodge 50,s that most put in .
they are small though for living . friends do have them that go to morocco every year. they manage .but its tight for space . normally its bed across the front .then kitchen one side at back sink the other . ok if you can use lots of outside for chairs etc .
the beauty of most demounts is the bed is over the cab so at least you have table and seats with out making the bed every day.
but it is cheap really.

hi david yes ive looked at them before hey are n 127 or 130 chassis as you know, ive seen obe upp close but if im honest i prefer mine with my high top roof
i want to keep my landrover for the uk but want sumthing bigger for spain so ican fly over spend 2 weeks at a time then bk to uk for work for 3 weeks a kind of partime fulltiming if that make sense

pic below 130 landrover abulance and artic fox camper slide out the diffrence is chalk and cheese

hi alan hope you are well

i rang up adrian flux for a quote for a race truck live in 7,5 tonne roadrunner . ive got a few years no claims it came out at 250.00 fully comp which i thought was good althought its that 90 abroad cover only so how i work that just wanting to leave it in spain and bring back for mot i dont know

it would give loads of space i passed my test pre 97 so no probs driving i thing its phg so chaep to tax would it be class 5 or 4 for mot alan?

the ally suntrekkers were more like 750kg from memory.
but why not just have a box on the merc or a canter /isuzu. they are narrow trucks . have a narrow box and you can sneak anywhere then .
keep it looking commercial is the answer.

i think you bang on here alan, the canter isuzu 7.5 tonne or that green merc in that earlier pic are narrower could you find one with a demountable box that i can kit out and put on anther nerwer vehicle if required

what do you think of those iveco walkthrough ones alan ? but go for the 6 tonne ones not the 3.5 tonne

i like the iveco .its just hard to find the bigger weight ones with walk through . but a demount box could be made for a canter Mini Artic | Lightweight Artics | Tailored Designs, UK Manufacturing | Vipex
i have thought about doing a box for mine on that cat protection league version .
its based on the mini artic and uses the fifth wheel and a locking leg . lots of circus and fair ground vehicles in spain are like this . thats where i first saw them .
messes my mot exemption up though . but they do look handy.
have you tried demountables on ebay .

hi alan
yes they are more difficult to find

i lke the mini artic route as it looks commercial and has volume and as you say can detach and have very small unit, too much choice alan lol yes ive seen the demountable on ebay that little suntrcker on a landy is only a tad bigger than my county landrover 110 with a roof on it .

imheading more towards a 7.5 tonne canter chassis box or fatbed wuth a demountable or merc 6 tonne chassis again with flat bed or demountable but with wanting mre stealth prob more towrds the box like this

a bit shorter and lower tho

hi alan yeh i did have a look but the box doesnt look like it will be big enouhgt, yes ive thouhgt babout then bt boxes too

it was just i thought it a good idea . i usually end up adapting something to suit me.
have thought about the roll on off hook type boxes .
i tend to always look at things and see if i can find another purpose.
when i first converted my trailer 13 yrs ago never knew i would be keeping it this long .
mind i had looked at it 5 yrs earlier and some one else bought it . they garaged it for 5 years then i bought it . the same one with the vw pulling it .
but keep looking it all comes right in the end .

IF you don't mind not having the demountable option these ex prison transport trucks are a good buy and really well insulated. mine is classed as motorcaravan on the logbook taxed phgv £165 per year, insurance on our second year was around £500 bearing in mind the lack of ncd as that is used on my other van. mine was a ten cell version and is around 27ft total length, as you might be able to see in my avatar they also use a lower box than commercial vehicles.

I wouldn't worry about the "stealth" bit. Have a look on mobile.de for some older Hymers. Driving around Europe you'll find more old Hymers parked out in the "bush". All the "stealth" campers are in the nearest campsite, next to the new Hymers, lol. The stealth look is really more fashion then function.

they arent classed as m,homes if you do demount .them thayts the trouble . but there are specialist insurance companies that cover them .

yes i thought of the prison trucks . easy to convert . well half is already done . i say keep the prison windows and roof hatches . Morocco 2008-2009 164.jpgSpain and Portugal 09 - 10 117.jpg
heres a couple of purple bobs .you will get why he is called purple . we made the side door into a stable door and cut the rear door in half to make two garage doors . panelled the top. it works great.
not quite as posh as fulltimers inside but we used b&q units . about 7 grand bought converted on the road.

hi paul thanks for your post.

questions
1. if you dont mind me asking how do you insure yoursie living van or m home etc?

2. its good you get no probs on aries do you get much prob with ares of france which have a 3.5 t limit as i ssume you would be over it

hi fulltimer
yeh ive seen the prison vans on ebay thiers a nice iveco on one now, if im honest whats putting me off one are 3 thngs, 1, time or lack with work, also while i have a good idea of diy by the time i brought the stuff and tools i dont think i would do a conversion justice, and 3, as ive not done any real long time in a van no more than 14 days at once and manily in a small camper size vehicle im not sure i know where id want stuff to go, we hear alt about ppl going down the self buld route to have the layout they want but im not sure wha i want in terms of layout. so ive crossed that tyoe of vehicle off my list but your input is inportant givn by your profile name you spend more time in your van than most
regards lee

your prob right also i was told that hiding in plain sight is a good as stealth, if your moving on every day or two this helos and of course keeping everthing in the vehicle so you are just parkin. i must admit going to france the other month was a eye open so relaxed in terms of parking unlike the uk
