Friends have just returned (well November last year) from a year long trip to the UK and Europe, they bought a campervan from P & P in Gosport, Hants. I think they did some sort of buyback deal. They handled all the insurance and road tax issues. They drove straight to Italy and then had a slow drive back to the UK via France, Spain, Portugal, France, Ireland, then UK.

I'd say that with a bit of digging you'd find other dealers who are friendly to overseas visitors. Just bombard dealers with questions by email and see what pops up.
