Proposal to restrict speed for over 3 tonn ULW

I thought being in the EU most laws would be harmonised e.g. France adopting 3.5t......... WRONG!!!

ask yourself why two lorries take 1mile(have yet to see that )to overtake! if two 40tonne laden lorries travellin' and one can pull 3mph faster why should he sit behind the other? how many times have you sat behind a vehicle in front bored? i'm not a lorry driver but empathise with them being restricted to 56 mph on the motorways! if two lorries are side be side then go in the fast lane!if you was travellin behind an identical vehical to yours but had a bit more power to overtake what would you do?the motorways are safe its the drivers!!!!! hgv/psv etc .

i 've held a motorbike licence and car licence for 30yrs and just lost my hgv (gained through army..no tachos :))due to health, i reckon all drivers should on waste ground drive all road going vehicles to see the difficulties assoc. with each.

the amount of times i've seen peeps try to undertake a lorry on a roundabout:( etc. so long as the fast lane is used sensible then there should be no probs. yeh you have middle lane hoggers but again if fast lane is open ,use it. cars and lorries today have much better braking systems than 30-40yrs ago (maybe more )when the highway code was written, so it (to me) should be 60/70 for hgv/psv and 80/90 to cars.

Being a Truck Driver for the past 25 years it is reassuring to read some of the posts that are fairly sympathetic towards the plight of our Truckers, especially with regards to the overtaking issue. Yes it is a complete pain in the Bum!! Not only for other road users but also to the truck drivers.
I could go on for hours about some of the things Car drivers get up to or don't get up to, just a couple of pet hates are, lack of Indication, pulling in front of a fully loaded 44t truck...etc etc etc but I must say the standered of driving has improved over the last 20 years or so.
Just to let you know, yes I do flash in a motorhome in;)
We do get a bad press some of it rightly so, but please don't tar us with the same brush, most of us are just the average Joe just trying to earn a crust, not a bad one actually....:):):):)

We seem to have gone off topic here.

We are not hitting out at our HGV fellow road users.

The real question is why should an HGV with a ULW of 3.5 ton and a Coach of the same ULW have different speed limits.

Why also should Motorhomes of 3.05 ton ULW (not 3.5 ton) be subject to the same limits as an HGV and not the higher PSV speed limit. In fact why is it being limited to 60 when a van of the same ULW is able to do 70 mph and go into the outside lane of a 3 lane motorway, where the Motorhome is restricted to the inner two lanes.

This will in effect reduce most of our larger motorhomes to 56 mph, as that is the intention of this regulation, but they have set the legal limit to 60 mph as they cannot guarantee speed limiters accuracy and to allow for downhill bursts of speed.

No doubt motorways will be now policed by average speed cameras and any vehicle getting to a camera before it should, will get an automatic ticket.

Definately wrong mate. Most of the European countries will ignore any laws which do not suit them, unlike the British government which will implement any and all laws, no matter how ridiculous and downright stupid they are, just to show what good little partners we are, and to hell with the British people.

Joan and myself both agree with that statement. Not only will they implement whatever the EU put out but will also expand on them as well.

No HGV's In Lane 2?

I dont think no hgv's in lane 2 would work.
Until recently i was driving mobile cranes for a living,45mph was the best most cranes could achieve and 20 mph on long uphill drags.

I understand that they are proposing to restrict HGV and PSV (and over 3 ton ULW Motorhomes) from using the outside lane.

This will mean they need to build more 3 lane sections on hills. They are however banning HGVs in the outside lane on two, 2 lane sections of the A1(M) in Durham. Time trial last year have shown their is no overall holdup of HGVs by doing this.

The overtaking ban for over 7.5ton has been in operation for well over a year now on a section of the A14.
It was also experimented with on the M42

It worked very well on the dual carriageway link twixt M42 and the M1 , the police only did 3 drivers for ignoring it..
all others were either lucky or complied....
I know cos I was doing relief night trunk work to and from Atherton during trial period..
Luckily it was suspended at nighttime [8pm till 6am IIRC ]
