I have just bought from Amazon a 24gb preloaded SIM card for my Huawei E5330 MiFi thingy, but it's very short on info.

The question is:- Have I got to activate it?, If so how? Do I just pop it the device & off we go?, Can I find out how much data remaining, etc.etc.

I would be grateful for any advice

I am guessing that you have bought the 3 data sim, 24gb valid for 24 months ? I use one at present and will in the near future buy a new one from Amazon.

Pop it into the mifi, switch it on and it should automatically activate. If you have bought it for use on the continent then it is important that you activate it in the uk before departure, otherwise it eats the data. I think you can use it abroad for about 60 days on the trot before you incur their displeasure. It has been reported that you should turn it on and use it at least once when you return to the uk in order to ‘stop’ the count abroad.

I use it for emails, forums, newspapers and weather. 12 gb did me for a year, including 7 weeks in France and Spain.

You can keep tabs on the usage by going to the 3 website and registering the sim there. After that you simply click on ‘my data’ when you want to check usage although it is a day behind in updating.

Hope this helps.

Hi Mike, we use a mi-fi on a three sim. we used to buy the 12gb over 12 months BUT madam ..... realising that we had the internet in the van decided to watch all her soaps on catch up tv, so now we pay monthly for 20Gb. We still use three because it has never let us down, make sure your sim card is data only. It keeps her happy!
Dont forget to check that you have a way of charging the mifi when you are up the road.

Silly question alert! Can I put a preloaded sim into my iPad or does it have to go int a mifi?

As advised, I popped the sim into the MiFi & it connected, great!

BUT, it didn't ask for a password, does that mean anyone in range can use it?

If your iPad has a sim card slot you can just put it in the iPad, the advantage with a mifi is that you can use it on more than one device.

A preloaded sim card doesn't have a password but your mifi will have, (unless you have turned it off) if your laptop is already registered with the mifi you will not have to put a password in, anyone in range can see it when they scan but without the password nobody can log on to it

Think it's probably easier in my iPad then as I've only got my phone (besides my iPad) when out and about in the van. I think the 24 gig works out loads cheaper than my monthly payment but I only use it in the van ... hmm, quandary. Or is it a conundrum? :rolleyes2::rolleyes2::rolleyes2:

I use a 24gig '3' sim, it has worked great everywhere including France, whether it is a quandary or a conundrum I don't know, I wasn't at school that day

Dont know anything about ipads yet carol, but make sure that the slot is for a sim card and not a memory card.
By the way, its a quandry.

Definitely a data sim, Roger. One of the negatives about iPads is they don't take memory cards. :mad1:

Your Mifi device will be password protected, it's usually stamped on a label inside the battery compartment or cover. If you have a phone take a picture of it so you don't have to keep removing the cover.

I always thought so Rog, I was going to correct Carol but remembered her profession so I googled it, it is quandary and quandry is a common misspelling, don't tell Carol now though or she will think she is always right:dance:

Carol, can't you just tether the I pad to your phone? That's what I do with my laptop. The 3GB a month on my phone is plenty, I've never used more than 2, even when away a month in Scotland or France. Mind you, I don't watch soaps.

Would never think that but I am pretty good at spelling!

Think I've only got 2 on my phone. I'd never thought about watching soaps on my iPad. I've got a vpn so should be able to watch stuff when wifi is available. I used it in Spain to download iPlayer though someone said you don't need a vpn. TBH, I don't fully understand it!
