We were in Portugal Spain and France late on last year, before we left I had a look at the road toll situation in Portugal.went on line and found Easytoll
Registered my van and linked my credit card to it and that was it or so I thought.
Received a letter and picture of the van with a fine about the vehicle having no associated tag about for weeks ago from a companyin England who obviouslydeals with these fines,I appealed and the case was put on hold, last week I received an emai from the same company to say that as it was a hired vehicle I should have looked into the tag system,I returned their email by explaining again about the Easytoll set up and even sent them a screenshot of the confirmation, start and expiry of the toll tag and further explained it was not a hire vehicle, not heard anything back from them yet.
BUT on Wednesday I received yet another fine fir the day after the first one, that's been put on hold also.
Needless to say, don't think e will be going back to Portugal.

We’ve not been to Portugal yet, hopefully next year. Sounds like a scam, as you already had a tag setup in place, just ignore, and don’t let these scammers put you off returning to Portugal.

I think the blame lies with whoever is operating and administering the toll system, not the entire country of Portugal ! ;) 😁

It's bloody frustrating though. A lot of "interactive" technology seems to be pretty wonky these days and when something goes wrong it's like tackling Everest to try and get it sorted! 🤷‍♀️

The old "garbage in, garbage out" and lack of proper old-fashioned human communication across everything - and mainly money-grabbing companies who don't give a sh*t about whether the "customer" gets a decent service or is treated fairly.

It's infuriating and anger-making.

I wouldn't pay, especially if I knew I was 100% in the right and could prove it in a court if it ever came to it.
The onus is on them to prove their system isn't working correctly, not me.

And could also possibly be a scam, they're pretty sophisticated these days.

Just think "Post Office Scandal".... except they certainly can't throw you in the clink for non-payment of fines that are 100% incorrect. ;)👍👌

there are 2 independent toll systems north to south an east to west the east to west are NPR the north to south have toll gates with open access for registered vehicles which did you register for

We used this company for France and Spain/Portugal registration. We got the detail from the official Le Shuttle website, there was a deal going at the time, free registration I think.

Thanks for polar link, I’d never heard of it, which I have now downloaded.

I hope you reach an amicable solution.

Polar steps is good you can share your journey,we got it from a very drunk couple from Aberdeen in Calpe April last year.

Have found Portugal tolls to be a bit of a nightmare to be honest as I think there are 3 seperate companies running different roads.
Coming into the algarve from Spain is easy enough as you can pull in and link your plate to a credit card and away you go. Going North can then be a bit of a problem. We ended up on one by accident so went to the local post office to arrange payment next day as we had been advised. Waited in line for an hour to be told they didn't know what to do . So pre ****** did nothing and nothing happened.
Next time , 2 years ago ?, had to get friendly campsite manager to go on laptop. He paid then I paid him .
Shame really as its the only thing that puts me off Portugal.
Wish they would bring back manned toll booths and give someone a job.

IMO, returning to manned booths would be like returning to horse snd cart use. Can you imagine the queues, especially at peak times. I can still the recall the times using forth road bridge when there were pay booths on North and south sides, a long wait ensued, plus the cheery individual collecting the tolls, must have been a brain dead job.

Being selfish I am not in a rush these days . Good to have someone to talk too when the machine shallows your card as it did to me last week in France. Need to keep jobs open too.
Just my opinion .

This trip is our first using the tags, previous trips I used my CC. Using CC was a faff. TAG, the way to, no faffing around, that said though, I have not experienced the Portugal setup.

Polarsteps, I wish I’d known about this before we headed out to EU land. Return leg will be a good practice run 👍
Me too Terry, I've just downloaded and been trying to retrace our steps since last Thursday. Sort of added the route but will be interesting to see how it fares as we head to Croatia tomorrow.

Yes I think that will be the future , not sure if you an get one tag that will handle all the different toll companies ?

I notice the tag reader in France is different to the tag reader in Spain. And fair to assume the may differ? I can’t see why this can’t be done though, especially with only one currency involved, the €.

One for Brussels to sort out.

Brussels has no locus, Terry. Roads and related issues are under the 'Government competence' of the individual Member State, hence the convoluted satnav commands 'take the E805/N952 ...' etc etc. Blaming Brussels for everything was just a cowardly political exercise and/or lie by all UK politicians, irrespective of their Party
