Is this a new design...haven't seen one like this. Like the rigidity and looks like it could be used on vehicles other than VW....https://www.facebook.com/share/r/18gA8jBvxp/

The rise in roof tents, and indeed cheap 'disposable' tents since COVID cannot be anything but detrimental to the image of motorhomes and properly equipped campervans.
Surely the proliferation of this wild camping style can only lead to an increase in antisocial behaviour with particular emphasis on inconsiderate parking, litter, and possibly toilet waste.
I appreciate that it will only be a tiny minority who create issues, but even that will be used as a stick to beat us with. The big white ungainly box will be the whipping boy as usual.

Tent box have sold hard shell roof tents like that for years.

Didnt know they were a thing....the post I saw was not a " cheap" disposable option, but in a nicely laid out motorhome.

Since your link did not work, I based part of my post on the link provided by Mark61. Effectively a sleeping pod. I group this type of equipment together with roof tents, and cheap tents. Whilst they can no doubt be used in a responsible manner, I am also in no doubt that some will see such accommodation as an easy way to wild camp. Logic and experience point towards a degree of antisocial misuse.
I look forward to you providing a working link in order to make a more specific comment.

Same. Looked like it was being used as a handy, internally accessed, sleeping extension for the roof of a camper van 🤷‍♀️

Sort of thing they have built into VW Californias and similar? The Californias are £70k a pop, so definitely not a cheap and cheerful throw away idea.
