Please can I go out sir ???

Just wait till they start triaging the old out of treatment in favour of young uns with kids to support!

Triage is dividing people into three groups.
e.g. a) Those who will die with or without treatment.
b) Those who will die without treatment but live with it.
c) Those who will live with or without treatment.
What you do with the three groups depends on your objectives. In a war situation the objective is to return Soldiers to the front line, so a lot of resource is given to “c” because they’re cost effective way of generating soldiers.

If the government wants to minimise deaths they will prioritise “b”, if the objective is to keep the NHS up and running they may prioritise differently.

You can, of course, triage on a non medical basis
e.g a) Critical workers -NHS; Police; Politicians!!!
b) Other workers – Shop workers; Bus drivers.
c) Non Workers – Pensioners; children.

Whatever happens I think I am in the losers column again.

My typical day consists of walking the dogs with the occasional chat if we meet anyone and then pottering about at home for the rest of the day. I see no reason to change my routine.

Our Granddaughter is now finished attending Uni until next September as one of her Lecturers has tested positive for the virus and she will work from home for the rest of the term. What will happen about exams remains to be seen.

How many people have died from flu this winter?
I get what your saying but governments love money and asking people to isolate will cost them billions, they would not give up the money involved if they thought just a couple of thousand deaths were the consequences of letting people carry on as normal. If governments are prepared to lose huge sums of VAT there is an urgency, possibly one we as the public are not aware about.

Governments prepared to lose income!?!

OK so UK numbers are still well down on those in France and Spain.
I do not like but can understand the idea for old people to fully isolate
1 Why not partially
2 Why not now or in 1 week to stem the flow
Spain and France and Italy earlier have gone for total lockdown
3 Surely Uk should do more now..eg close schools and more
Wait too long and the problem is too big.
I also think it better to not "penalise" groups ..That breeds discontent and so non-compliance
I believe that children in schools are a huge transmission issue
EG insecondary school most wil have contact with 100 or more others
they sit next to each other in most classrooms
Lunchbreak in particular dinner queues mean more closer contact
BUT maybe "The best Scientific advice" ( as THEY keep quoting ) contradicts common sense !

Yes it is me again..old people

I remember all too well.
After my father had a 2nd hip op (revision) he was confined to hospital (inevitably)
I would visit him every weekend and take him out for a drive / lunch

More relevant is when he tried to live alone again in his house..NOT possible so he came to stay with me (NOT live)..
He was old and frail and so a visit to the doctor resulted in him being placed in a care home with some nursing..
He hated it..No stimulation poor food and more. He became a "Grumpy Old Man" (despite my efforts)
I would collect him most Wednesday evenings and take him to my house.
Sundays would be an all day visit midday to 10pm
These were his ONLY breaks from an otherwise dull and depressing existence in the care home.
I do not post this for people to say "oh what a good son you were!" but to highlight the problem of incarcerated old people with a still reasonable brain.
There were other residents at the care home BUT he became totally "Pissed Off" with his life.
A man who worked hard from age 15 to 65 and did loads for My mother my sister and indeed me.
I have tears in my eyes now as I think of his last 3 years. The minister acknowledges mental health issues BUT I fear for the old people particularly those who live alone...Time for another rum !

BoJo & his mates will know full well they haven't acted soon enough by now, surely?
Whether that's been out of simple ignorance/incompetence or done deliberately who can tell?

The problem with the virus is that the situation in the UK is probably too advanced already.

I'm betting "the best scientific advice" guys drafted in will end up being the fall guys for the govt. when the rollercoaster eventually stops and the blame game and post mortem analysis begins. But we're a long way from the luxury of that yet...

Propaganda and lies are generally the only reliable things to come out in dangerous times like this, and they sure have been slow to get the right information out there and up front where we've all needed it.

We need a 'Churchill' at this moment in time, and I have severe doubts that BoJo can measure up to the situation we're facing.
He's several inches too short, imho.

So we just have to trust own common sense and judgement.

A truly shocking state of affairs given the gravity of the situation.

How many people have died from flu this winter?

Doesn't matter if it is 2 or 2 million, the Corona virus is on top of whatever the number is.
Most oldies would have had the flu jab, or if they have ever had the flu they will have some resistance to it anyway.
It's very doubtful I will ever catch flu, I get the jab each year and had flu twice, more than once is unusual, thrice is virtually unheard. However, the Corona virus can infect 7.53 billion people, me, you, uncle Tom Cobbly and all, It's a new virus with no known resistance to it other than personal hygiene and avoidance of people where ever possible.

Stay safe you both.x

How many people have died from flu this winter?
Difficult to get a definitive answer - mostofthe stats refer to additional mortality rates.
But your question us valid because I expect it will be more than covid19.

My apologies, Marie. This came over as a me me me post re "annuity". But it is one example of how this current situation can affect individuals.

So many people with businesses large and small will be hurting real soon, I do reflect on those seeing the light after the horrendous flooding, light snuffed out with this virus crap.

Anyways, we are where we are, let us hope our government put our money where their mouth is. 😷

No need for apologies, Terry, loads of people in the same boat.
This crisis is so much bigger than just the virus, which is bad enough on its own. The effects will be devastating and widespread.

My sister is closing down a small building society account tomorrow. She has always kept it for emergencies. Investments in pensions have been completely hammered and she is very unsure about what the future holds financially, like millions of others. No idea what my extremely titchy pension pot is looking like just now, daren't think about it. But at least we're still alive for now, which is more important 😜

Talking to friends today who are keeping themselves to themselves BUT they still have to do the school run with the four grandkids because their parents have to go to work. Told him he was being a bit of a fool and if anyone was going to get it the grandkids would and they will happily pass it on. Pity his 3 daughters don't think a bit more about their parents.

SWMBO's lot have been great. Even had a video call today that cheered her up. Cabin fever has set in already. SWMBO's three sons realise how important it is to just keep their distance.
