i have been told this is a popular place for longer stays than just overnight; anyone know if this is still true as it looks nice enough to make a serious detour from our forthcoming itinery

Stayed there for a couple of days about 18 months ago. Its flat and solid ground. No facilities that we could find except rubbish dumping. No shops etc--so go prepared. A few kms away is the village of Salin De Giraud where there is an Aire des services (Rue de la Bouvine--cant remember GPS co-ords) with fresh-water, toilet and waste water facilities. Also some shops. You would pass this way to get to the beach.
Good fishing off the beach and also windsurfing on the adjacent lagoon.

Piémanson is really the end of the world (it should not be that safe in high season) about 12 km from civilsation.
On the other side of the river lies Port Louis (also with shops and services) (ferry costs were 4,5€) From there is a road, only 7 km from civisation, (Route Plage Napoléon) up to the beach of 'They de Roustan'. N 43 21 11.8, E 4 52 45.5
You can wild on the beach. Beautifull but lonely spot (not in summer though).
You'll see the tall ships for Port de Fos.
