Peugot J5 base with Pilote - A few newbie questions 1992.

Hi,

Firstly how do I get the kids in the back warm when we are driving, it gets warm in the cab but not so much in the back. Do I need to drive with the fire on so the blow air gets hot? Will the blow air heating get hot from teh electric as I tried for 5 mins the other day and it didn't seem to blow anything but cold air until I turned the gas fire on. Any suggestions other than blankets would be welcomed.

Another question I have is why does my second crunch? It did this is the Hymer Camp I had and only started doing it in the Pilote just recently. We have only had it for 6 weeks roughly, is this a common motorhome problem? I am making sure the clutch is well and truly down, it only seems to crunch when changing down from 3rd and not when I go 1st to 2nd. Wierd.

Any guidance would be appreciated. We are living in a house sit in the Loire Valley at the moment then looking to travel around the rest of Europe in April.

Regards

Nathan:confused:

your gearbox problen sounds like 2cd gear synchro is on its way out ,try double declutching or a steady gear change. as for the heating in the rear dont drive with the heating on ,not safe you could always rig a ducting system from your cab heater through into the back or i suppose a second heater in the back running off the engine cooling system. probably somthing similar to the system fitted in busses might work

I suggest that as long as you have the 2nd gear problem and until you get it fixed, move from 1st to 3rd, of course you need to give the 1st a little more revs to get you to run smoother on 3rd.

a weak syncro is not that bad and the gear box will last many miles ,after all i can remember when gear boxes had no synchromesh on 1st and 2cd gear some dident have it on any gear hence the crash box. the synchromesh was only developed to help in changing gear smoothley without the need for double de clutching on changing gear. if you match your engine revs to the gear change you dont even need your clutch to change gear. its a good thing to learn to do this as if you have a clutch cable go or a leak in your hydrolic system you can drive for miles and you can always get home . as long as your gear box is not noisy i wouldent realy worry. if you do perfect it its surprising how much longer your clutch will last ......

Don't drive with the gas on. If you had an accident there could be a burst pipe and an explosion.

Maybe a heavy curtain behind the kids to keep the heat forward or put in some ducting from the dash to a rear location as fitted in many exec saloons for the rear passengers.

Thanks for the advice

Well I appreciate all the advice, sometimes you just need a reassurance that your not doing something silly. I will stick with blankets or heat the whole van before we set off so the kids are hot. Don't want to drive with the gas on in case we get hit.

The gearbox is fine when you time it right which I do most the time, I will take the advice on board. Thanks to you all.;)

just another saftey tip to anyone realy who are reading this .as a lot if not all of gas heaters exhaust gasses vent to the outside there is always the danger of carbon monoxide that should escape from the vent returning back into the van whilst driving ,thats always assuming the back pressure in the vent wont cause the fire to go out first
