Peugeot Boxer uneven running in 5th gear

I'd appreciate any advice on this. My Peugeot Boxer 1996 2 litre petrol has an intermittent fault. Noticeably mostly when in 5th gear at between 35 and 45 mph the engine runs unevenly and lacks power. This problem seems to crop up and last for several weeks and then cures itself for a while. Last time it was fine for several months, but it's just reappeared again. The garage hasn't been able to find out what is causing it, I suspect something to do with the fuel injection system, but I'm only guessing. Can anyone suggest what it might be, it's sending me mad.

If you are driving at 35 mph in 5th gear, I expect you (or anyone else) would have a problem. That is far too slow for 5th gear. Its a wonder your gearbox is up to the strain you are putting on it. It is too slow for a diesel engine, never mind a petrol one.

i agree with you on this but didn't like telling him
us yorkys arn't as this thick skinned as you Geordie's

5th gear

At that age I would start with New HT leads and plugs,if only to eliminate them as a potential problem if you have not already changed them.(look at the leads in the dark to see if there is any arcing, but dont't touch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!).Try a strong dose of injector cleaner if you have not used some for a while or at all.Check all breather hoses.

As maingate says do not labour in 5th gear ,this is the Achillies heal as it only gets splash lubrication so needs a few revs.Don't save a little fuel then need £500 gearbox.

If you want to do the m/h some good, change the gearbox oil.Could be a good investment.

Good luck

Many thanks, leads and plugs have been changed, but I will try injector cleaner next.
I should clarify, I didn't explain very well, I don't make a habit of running at 35 in 5th, but the problem is noticeable at low revs and is less noticeable at higher revs.

Check for air leaks

Check for faults "under load" .Are the leads well onto the spark plugs.Check for any air leaks in hoses .Clean the throttle body with carb cleaner. You could try the "Redex " treatment, old fashioned but like many of the old remadies it can work.Borrow a compression tester is see if a cylinder is down on compression.I hope it's something simple. It's easy to overlook the obvious ,sometimes a second opinion will spot something.
Good luck

peugeot Boxer 1900cc

i had similar problems check out the title above on this forum i had good responce, try the stepper motor

Many thanks, I'm trying fuel injector cleaner first as it's easiest and cheapest, if no luck I'll get the garage to look at fitting a new stepper motor.

Stepper motor.

You can somtimes check the operation with a voltmeter, but it needs an "old fashoned"
analogue ,needle type meter as the voltage change is too fast for most multimeters.Or try a new one.

I think you are on the right track, try the cheap thing first that do some good anyway.

Someone with a good fault finding electronic set up may help but they are only as good as the operator.

Good luck

Idle control valve

Could be the idle control valve needs cleaning out, this is linked to the stepper motor operation but is cheap(carb cleaner) to clean and a good job to have done. Not all are cleanable though. This problem is often associated with poor idle and low rev operation.
