Petition to raise Cat B licence to 4250kg

I've signed it. It makes sense as a 3850kg motorhome can in theory be exactly the same van as one thats plated to 3500kg and some manufacturers down plate them deliberately so that anyone can drive them leaving naff all legal payload. Although the real reason I've signed it is in 11 years time when I'm 70 and have to apply for a medical to drive my 4250kg current van I might be thinking of selling it by then and it will go up in value as anyone can drive it if this passes. :ROFLMAO:

The EU have already agreed to raise the weight to 4250kg and the U.K. are expected to follow, It’s expected to be introduced in 2030.
Oddly if you have an electric powered motorhome that’s 4250kg you can currently drive it on a U.K. cat B licence 🙄

I would note that the EU are saying each country must apply their own rules on extra testing to gain a 4250kg B cat licnce.
New rules will also be introduced allowing drivers holding a category B driving licence to, after some targeted training or testing decided for by the Member State, acquire additional rights to drive heavy motor caravans.

Folk here just drive away as no one ever gets stopped or ask to see licence.
Good way of potentially losing your vehicle over here....

"Driving a motor vehicle otherwise than in accordance with a licence"

Which equals no insurance..... So bye bye vehicle...

Good chance of them spotting it too via ANPR...
As they can see who's insured for what vehicle and the licence details...

As we often follow EU regs on such things it's almost inevitable this will happen. The EU made the change a few months ago ad for once they have a point. EVs are heavier and that's the thinking behind it I understand.

That was my concern on selling >3.5t motorhomes in a few years time, unless they change the law soon there will be very few drivers with the C1 licence left to buy the heavier ones and few will go to the effort of taking the test for 7.5t.

I can't say it ever crossed my mind but I'm only 59. I passed my test two weeks after my 17th Birthday in 1983. The C1 thing didn't come in until 1997 so there must be loads of C1 entitled drivers still coming through the ranks and fancying a motorhome for some years yet I would think. Apparently all the EU countries have to have implemented this by 2030 so maybe the UK won't be far behind or even before then. Dunno, don't care. :D

The item you quoted says 'each Member State' and UK is not a Member. Also EU is bending with the with the wind as German & Italian vehicle manufacturers say they simply cannot/will not be ready for 2030 or even 2035, so lots of concessions are expected from the EU
