A few years ago a dear friend gave us a mifi box, and now we are about to invade Europe I realise that it will probably have run out of steam which means we will need a new card, so can anyone recommend a cheap sim for it

More information required.

If it’s an old box is it 3g or 4g? The model of the box would be useful information. Some operators have turned off 3g in Europe so performance of 3g modems could be patchy.

Where in Europe are you visiting and for how long?

How much monthly data do you need? Is it used just for internet surfing and downloading newspapers or for video streaming also?

Are you looking to use a U.K. sim with roaming or buying a sim local to the countries you are visiting?

I think it was a Huewei E5577 or similar, it had external antenna ports and it was 3G/4G, it was unlocked to all networks

This is what I use you can buy them on the till in supermarkets in France top it up on line when reqd

This is the one I use, it has 24gb of data and is valid for 2 years.
I have used two or three of these over the past years in a mifi box but the phone I have now is dual sim so it is left in there all the time, never had any problems with it home or abroad
The price varies a bit depending on where you buy it

I have always used the same Three mobile 24gb sim when travelling without any issue in both my tablet and my mifi but beware that it now has a 12gb fair useage limit when roaming overseas. I have recently purchased a 200gb data only sim from RWG which apparently lets you use the full allowance overseas - yet to be confirmed by trying it so I am also getting a couple of 24gb Three mobile cards as back up - these have to be activated in the UK before heading off to foreign parts.

Read the T&Cs very carefully! RWG say in the small print that you can only tether one item at a time. Réglo Mobile do not allow use in a "boitier radio" and their SIM stopped working shortly after I activated it in a Teltonika RUT955. Might be OK in a MiFi unit. Popit SIM working very nicely in the RUT955.

I’m not too fussed about tethering as I very rarely use it. I mainly use just the iPad when overseas and my phone has a pay monthly EE sim which is on an old contract so I use this when roaming overseas as well as it’s within my contract (subject again to 12gb limit)
Some people with the RWG data sim seem to be having difficulties connecting to the internet overseas when using the bog standard sim at £18/m for 200gb (which you choose as either being on Vodafone or EE). A few are trying the ”global” sim for an additional £10/m - still not too bad at a total of £28/m for a full 200gb overseas every month. I am watching how they get on and may switch to the global version before I head off.

You wonderful folks, I thank you. I'm inclined to go with the Amazon offer that phil suggested because the previous one was also a 3 mobile one. So my friends ta once again

That looks very expensive compared with Popit (and others) and is limited to 12GB per month when roaming.

If you check the link, it says you are subject to a fair use limit of 12 Gb when abroad. I’m leaving Three behind because they don’t give you what you pay for and every year, around April time, they increase the monthly cost.

I've used the 3 data sims for years now in my mifi and normally have the 24gb version in the UK. When abroad, instead of buying a 24gb sim, I buy 2 x 12gb (pr more). That way, you can pop the second sim in when you've reached the end of your 'fair use limit'.

I don't know if the rules are the same but you used to have to activate each sim in the UK before heading abroad. Just pop each sim into your phone before your overseas holiday and make sure it's live, then file the spare ones way for when needed.

I use three 24 monthe data sim same as minisorella ,never used abroad works well in my tablet.

This seems implausible. The whole point of tethering is that one device connects on behalf of other devices.

The network might be able to detect that tethering is happening, but knowing how many devices are tethered would be pretty tricky.

Can you quote their exact wording? I can't find it in their website. Preventing (as opposed to limiting) tethering would be a breach of their telecoms licence, so I'd be surprised if this was the case.

Personally I've not connected more than fifteen devices at a time using an RWG SIM, but that worked just fine.

One of the advantages of RWG is that they use EE which has the best network in the UK (but now BT are running the show, that will change).

Unfortunately, in the past EE had less good roaming agreements with European networks, so you had to settle for poorer coverage overseas. I've not been to Europe since lockdown so I don't know if that has changed.

Your obligations

1. You must use the Services in accordance with this Agreement, the Fair Use Policy and any other reasonable instructions we give you from time to time.
2. You may use the Services as set out in this Agreement and for your own personal use. You may also use the Services through your Device as a means to connect another personal device (for example, a tablet) to the internet (Tethering) but you must not Tether more than one device at the same time.

Well, they hid that well in the T&C's. I can assure you actual experience, that they either don't know or don't care that I tethered a whole network of devices (up to 15 at a time) for several weeks.

I am now using Three sim cards for that connection instead, despite the fact that it's les good, simply because it's too good a price to turn down. Up to 350GB of data per month for £4.18 per month is too good a deal to turn down

But that 350GB of data is presumably in UK, not Europe which was where the OP was going.
