Parking Regulations

And we're only discussing overhanging another bay. Different rules apply if you are at the end of the bays and overhang say a double yellow.

I would guess even less likely to get a ticket .
Going to do a survey.
Maybe mañana

Get a set of false plates with the local MP's registration number on it..
Problem solved....
Hell did I just write that

Ps...don't forget to cover the chassis number in the dash up...
I have a pet hate of over zealous traffic wardens....

Got it, page 42, one full wheel outside bay is a contravention code 24 in NI, this does not mean the same rule applies in england/wales/scotland.

The documents makes much use of the term "parked wholy" bur I didn't find a definition.
It contains many photographs of vehicles overhanging a bay and uses them to illustrate offences.

Not sure if things are the same over here.

Anyway you keep parking in compliance with your understanding and I'll park in accordance with mine.

So far I've had one parking fine in 60 years of motoring, and that was overturned when I appealed.

The problem then is knowing what the local regulations are, it's very rare(if ever?) that signage will stipulate if keeping vehicle within bay refers to wheels or bodywork. As above, if there's a traffic warden about then you can ask, after all they are the ones who will give you a ticket, otherwise you either have to check with each council, or abandon parking. It would be very helpful if every council followed the same guidelines.
Anyway back to OP, I find with most parking bays the wheels on our 6.36m XLWB van just fit in the bay, and the LWB 6m vans have the exact same distance between wheels, so the only differance is the amount of overhang.

I think I would just assume the worst in that case. Mute point for me as my van would never fit in either case. Although as I have a spaz pass (Blue badge) I could just be a total tw@ and park on a double yellow. 😵‍💫

It's a general misconception that only the wheels need to be within the marked bay.

In general the entire vehicle needs to be within the marked bay, that's the rules. :)

And the contravention.

24 – Your vehicle wasn’t parked correctly within the bay markings.
That is one interpretation, but more than one car park warden and traffic warden has told me the opposite.

What the law or the rules say is irrelevant. What matters is the interpretation of the people issuing the penalty tickets.

The reality is that pretty near half of all cars in car parks with marked spaceoverhang a bit at one end or the other.

Recently I parked in an IKEA car park and commented that my car exactly fitted into the length, with nothing like half an inch to spare.

Width wise, it was less tight after the door mirrors folded in, but lots of parked cars were overhanging the edges, and I'd most were overhanging at one end or the other. Not that IKEA seem to worry.

The problem.is that the signs never say whether the enforcement applies the 'wheels in' rule or the rather silly 'all in' rule.

WHY is the "all in" rule silly? For three consecutive parking spaces, if the outside two had overhangs then the middle one becomes unavailable!
CLARITY would be sensible.

The trouble is I find, its not just the local authorities , but can also be the individual enforcement officer.
I have been know in the past when I had me tag to buy two spaces That "appeared " to have worked.

edit to add
The trouble is in general that the spaces are based on smaller cars etc and they themselves aren't that small now a days!
