Parking charge

Even when I was walking on crutches, we would always park far from doors, the desperation of some people to save a couple of steps is quite astounding, I realise some have good reason.

I agree Colin. How many times do you see cars nip straight into the disabled bays when you just know (or strongly suspect) they are not disabled - the lack of a Blue Badge is a bit of a giveaway.

Lazy, arrogant, entitled gits!

Unless I can see lots of other M/Homes parked beyond the designated bays [for cars], I always find the Security Guard or the person collecting the trolleys and check whether it is OK to occupy 2 bays. It isn't the cost, it's the thought of being fined for trying to provide custom to the supermarket, and it would wind me up for days afterwards

FWIW, I need to take up 4 bays or risk the rear overhang hitting an adjacent car on exiting. So, I tried this at a Tesco only to be told that they don't manage the car park as they have passed that function to a parking management company. I didn't shop there and wrote to Tesco to let them know that they'd lost my business. I'm reasonably local to that store and previously called in to stock up the van on the way out to a trip...

Pic goods up in car and take back to camper, all the shops now run with outside contractors.

The van is stored almost an hour's drive from home and that Tesco is on the other side of an expensive toll bridge and about half an hour from the storage site. It was convenient to stop off on the way out; but no longer because of the parking situation. We've got the choice of other supermarkets, including a Co-op a further half hour eastward, that don't have the same issue. It's a pity because we used to stop at that Tesco almost every time we headed East since it's about a minute and a half off the main road and it saved us having to cart loads of food etc. in the car on the way to collect the van. Now, we use a Sainsbury's a few minutes walk from home and take the goods over to the van, or stop in one of the competing stores that don't have that parking issue...

My experience has been that the staff member has been accommodating, and has often said something like, 'Thank you for asking, instead of just taking' ...

A bit of courtesy costs nothing, and 'shop floor' staff get a fair bit of grief from disgruntled customers ...

The member of staff (i.e. the security guy) I spoke with was extremely polite. However, he could not give me permission to take up an appropriate amount of space for my van as the car park was managed by someone else and hence outside his remit and so he could not vary the displayed terms. I thanked him for his help -- sincere thanks since he gave me the information I needed to decline the terms and conditions I'd be subjected to had I shopped there. That said, I don't think it hurt to drop a quick message to Tesco to let them know why I declined to shop there on this and subsequent occasions. Who knows, it's a massive car park -- certainly with enough space to dedicate an bit of it for LWB vehicles...

Simple answer?

Not enough profit in doing it.
Certainly not enough to make it worth their, or their shareholders, while bothering with.
These are private corporates, not local councils or govt.

You can fit a lot more cars into the space LWB vehicles would use? 🤷‍♀️
More cars = more customers, probably spending the same as 1 moho would occupying the same space?
Same applies whether it's the store or the contracted out parking company.

Customer service? That started to decline when local old fashioned high street shops put the shutters up and buying moved online or to out-of-town retail parks (and Amazon started to rule the shopping world)

Me, cynical? Noooo! 🤞:devilish: 😜

The thing about this particular car park is that it's rarely (if ever) full. So providing space for those with motorhomes, LWB vans, etc. should provide additional footfall. That is, more vehicles = more customers. The parking company could also benefit from parking fees via JustPark, MyParkingSpace, etc. AFAICT, everyone would win...

True, Geoff, but you need managers in organisations with sufficient critical/logical thinking and - more importantly - the autonomy (and will) to introduce any practical changes to their existing “systems”.

Plus, in reality, when it comes to overall vehicle use, motorhomes are still very much a minority 🤷‍♀️

When Tesco used to manage their own car park, various contractor's vehicles (LWB flatbeds, LWB vans, etc.) and motorhomes were a common sight. It wasn't unusual to see more than half a dozen vehicles that couldn't fit in a single bay, and each was taking either 2 or 4 spaces. The time I asked the security guy, my van was the only LWB vehicle there. Thus, I suspect it can be shown that the parking company's rules are costing Tesco custom...

... in any case, it took me less time to write and send a quick message pointing out that the new parking rules has cost them my business than I've spent posting to this thread. I could make no difference by not writing whereas there is a possibility, no matter how small, that my writing might help Tesco change the rules for mutual benefit. (Just sayin')

A parking warden told me that if you cannot park a vehicle the same as yours in an adjacent bay then he will ticket. That seems to quite clearly answer the overhanging problem. I have a Peugeot Boxer L2 H2 that doesn't fit in some bays

The issue is that the rules are ill-defined, or badly described.

Very few modern cars easily fit into a normal car parking space. Cars have got bigger over the years, but spaces haven't. It's difficult to tuck them in.

Look at any car park and more than 50% of the parked cars have one bit or another overhanging the lines. They don't get ticketed for that.

My motorhome definitely will not fit into a single space, but parked carefully, its wheels all will. Unfortunately that means that the space behind is left unusable.

So when parking, I have to decide whether the van will sit on tiptoe in a single space, or be left in a more sensible position that leaves the next space usable.

The signs almost never tell you which is best.
