Parking at Chartres?

Can anybody advise me where I can park the MH at Chartres, in walking distance of the cathedral? Ideally overnight, if not just for a few hours in the evening to see the illuminations (saw them on a bike trip recently and would love to take the wife to see them).

I see in the ACSI book that there is an ideally located municiple site (Campsite Les Bords de l'Eure in Chartres | France - ACSI ) but as it's high season in France I expect it will be full and I can't find any way to book (this will be our first venture into Europe in the camper so don't really know what a municiple site is?).

Also, how are they on the continent for taking dogs on buses or taxis?

thank you

Hi, The only other one I have that might allow overnight is here. 48.421629,1.480383 but it is out a bit.

The other option is to get there early and park in "place st pierre.

Poor site

Hi Oak,

We stayed at this site late last year on our return trip from Spain. There was only one other camper on the site and couple of run down full time static caravans the toilets and showers were very old and run down with no hot water or heating in the block. It didn't help that they were also clearing the tons of leaves with industrial blowers all day and when we moved to the other side of the site for peace and quite, the next morning they started behind our van.The management were never there at the times on the office and it seemed they were not bothered as it was the last three days before closing. The one couple we did meet said they were there last year and they hold a market in the camping area once a week and there were vans broken into and strangers not from the site wandering about while they were there. It is a Beautiful city to visit but I would not return to that site in any season. As you come down the hill with the campsite on your right,if you travel another hundred yards on there is parking on the right along side but off the road over looking fields and wetlands were we parked up for lunch and to get away from the leaf blowers. You may be able to overnight there as i saw no signs but you may get traffic noise good luck.

Snowbirds.

It is quite common in places to find that dogs are not allowed on buses, or in taxis. We certainly were able to take our dog on the Paris tour bus last year and I think we were able to get our dog on the bus in Arcachon but it is safest to ask first.

Thanks for this info - I've added it to the France POIs :D

We stopped at this site last year because we couldn't find anything closer. I don't think you will have trouble getting a pitch there.

There is motorhome parking outside the campsite but don't do it, regular break-ins. In fact, according to a magazine article last year, a couple of vans got done inside the campsite!.

When visiting Chartres we park in the Av.d'Aligre which is a short walk to the cathedral but can be a bit noisy with traffic at night so we adjourn to the far end of the road near the sports complex.

There's also a very nice bar at the town end of the road run by a young couple & the wife speaks some English.
