Parked next to a jet aircraft...

Must admit I stopped reading this thread quite early on, what an intolerant lot folks are turning into.

You are all free to move elsewhere if you ever find yourself next to me if we are cold and want to run the Eber or batteries are low and we need to run a generator.

Exactly as stated in post #39 "The present day trend towards if it suits me I’ll do it and stuff anyone else prevails"

More ‘I can be as bloody minded as anyone else can’.

Where do you draw the line?

I've heard people snoring whilst I'm trying to sleep, are they next on the £$%^ list below heaters?

Yes, and I've told her about it. She said use your earplugs [emoji47]

Sometimes I've been woken up by the cat moving. Now THAT is just well out of order!!

You want to try our two dogs Dave. One under the covers and the other on top. When you do decide to get up it’s a real struggle. Dunno how folks go on with big dogs that jump on the bed :)

Well, when I said "woken by the cat moving", I should have been more precise....

It wasn't when she jumped off the bed, it was when she reversed the enormous Pantechnicon up the driveway to put all her toys in

I don't understand why people install diesel heaters when they could install an LPG equivalent for less money.

For a truck that has no LPG or for a boat that can't have LPG dropouts, there is some sense in it, but for a motorhome, LPG is cheaper to install, cheaper to run, cleaner, quieter, uses less 12v power and is more controllable.

So why fit a diesel heater?

As I only have a small gas cylinder and no space to fit another I’m really pleased to have a diesel heater.

diesel heaters make sense in that fuel is readily available in remote locations the same cant be said of LPG and if touring abroad the plethora of different regulators

I think you mean adaptors

I think you mean adaptors

if you are on bottles a uk propane regulator wont fit the French Spanish or Dutch equivalent and some times the pig tails need changing adaptors if you have gas it , gaslow etc

Diesel is far easier to obtain even at home in the wilds of Scotland simply more retailers

And not even started on Butane !

Sorry, the facts are not with you.

The calorific value of propane is 13.99KWh per kilogramme, and 0.498 kg/litre. So at 53p per litre, it is 7.6p per KWh
The calorific value of diesel is 12.67KWh per kilogramme and 0.846kg/litre. So at £1.26 per litre, it is 11.75p per KWh.

That means that the cost of diesel is 50% more than LPG providing the same amount of energy. So an LPG heater would need to be vastly less efficient than a diesel heater to cost more to run. And in reality, they are a bit more efficient, not less.

If you can get red diesel at less than 80p a litre, it matches LPG for price.

I am in the process of fitting a diesel heater with day tank. It has 2 silencers and is being installed in a sound insulated container. and I can get red diesel :sucks: ;)

Many if not all PVC conversions can only use 3.9kg gas bottles so obviously we are paying the top price for our lpg in these cases with a limited supply of lpg it is better to use diesel as we have a better and more plentyfull supply. Your cost are possibly related to underslung tanks bought at pump prices.

I'm not going to apologise for disagreeing with you ...

I've used both types of heaters in differing vehicles AND my own experience is that I'll be fitting another eberspacher in the Motorhome and relegating the gas fire to looking pretty, despite having refillable gas bottles ...

I'll be keeping those for running the cooker (the 3 way fridge will be going too and be replaced with a 12v compressor type powered by the solar I'll be fitting) ...

Though no doubt you'll disagree with that too ....hey ho .

The lessons I learned from building the transit and making it self sufficient power wise for our needs have been invaluable, just need to do similar with the swift now .

Compressor fridge and solar charging

Off topic I know but I’m with you on the compressor fridge, ours is an A++ rated cheapie (£150ish) full size under counter hisense fridge, 240volt 0.5amp yes, 0.5amp, i see very little drop on the battery meter from our battery’s overnight. A 3 way fridge is very expensive to buy new,and even though they must use very little gas off grid, solar is free.

Well I filled up my Gaslow at Abingdon and it was 67ppl, you can’t use 53ppl when that is a really low price you have to be more realistic. Even so lpg may work out a little cheaper but I doubt anyone with a diesel heater would change for gas. If you have a diesel van then you will make sure you always have fuel and if us readily available as Mriceman said.

I got Caz to turn our eberspacher on and I stood less than a metre from the exhaust and used the voice memo on my phone to record it. I had to shout to her to check it was on! On playback you can hear birds twittering in trees 40 feet away louder than the exhaust and that is during first fire up where it Ramos up.

I suggest we have people shouting about things once again that aren’t even a problem same as we had with generators when people who were against them didn’t even realise they were running at meets they have been to.

If you are next to someone who has one that sounds like a jet engine (mine was much louder before silencing today) then instead of being a dick go and speak nicely with them and ask if they know they can get exhaust and inlet silencers for around a tenner on eBay. After all aren’t we supposed to be a friendly group?
