Overnighting in tesco car parks

Tesco Hornsea

I asked the manager of Tesco in Hornsea if he would allow overnighting by Motorhomes. The answer was YES but not for extra large vans as the site is piled on very soft ground.

So how do they get the goods in the shop, park the 38ton lorry down the road and get the staff to carry the goods in

Tesco.....

I have started this thread after some one put on another thread that they like Tesco because they can overnight there, we have never found a Tesco that have allowed us to overnight on one occasion I did ask and was told no ( something about insurance and elf and safety ). If some of you have stayed over in Tesco would you please post on here what stores it was as I think it could be useful to a lot of us many thanks.

Hi Twas me on a recommendation..
I guess it depends on the nature / size of the carpark and is it a Tesco operated CP or a CarPark company.
Buy some food and ask ! ...The MD is allegedly MH friendly
No tables chairs etc be discreet find a good spot (from their viewpoint) Leave early

As in the cameras take your reg and take your reg in the way out so if y go over thier limit they can send u a fine weather u pay it is another thing but they rnt just CCTV

How wrong you are! They don't have any legal powers to fine you. All they can do is send an invoice, which you can choose to ignore.

I thought the laws around these parking fines / invoices had now changed, as before they had to be directed at the vehicle driver which was almost impossible to prove, now I believe they can be directed at the vehicle owner/keeper , a lot easier to enforce especially when DVLA are quite willing to dish out your details for a few quid.

The law about these so-called fines hasn't actually changed, but the companies issuing invoices for parking charges try to make you think they have. When I recently challenged a 'Parking Charge Notice' I actually got an apology for the inconvenience they had caused me.

Only Penalty Charge Notices issued with the authority of councils or police are fines, and these are enforcable.

I realise this now after reading the article in the link in my other post, cheers though

Steve I never said they had legal powers I was just pointing out that's what the cameras do

The car park and the goods in are entirely seperate areas in nearly all cases. LIDL and Aldi differ as usual from the norm.

A friend of mine has overnighted in the Totnes Morrisons, but he did ask permission, and had a meal there. I think they closed the gates, but he wasn't worried, as he didn't want to go anywhere, and it stopped the boy racers coming in.

Well it seems to me the best thing to do is ask the manager and go with his answer :) seems some are ok with you staying 1 night .... but a lot are not.

Couple of yrs ago I went to the local Tesco first thing on a Sunday morning, couldnt get anywhere near it, as roads surrounding blocked by police.Asked around , lots of theories as to why, been a murder etc etc.Eventually they opened the c.park and it all calmed down.Turned out that they found a young reveller from the previous night, naked ,gaffa taped to a lampost in the c.park! I wonder if it was a illegal parking motorhomer who wouldnt leave when asked?

You stated "they can send u a fine". To issue a fine requires legal powers. Private car parking companies can only issue an invoice, which is not legally enforcable.

I have parked in Tesco's at Ryde in my old home-place the Isle of Wight when I have re-visited there. One the right hand side there is a Place called dancing waters and a line of trees. No probs. I have also stayed on the car park of the central supermarket in Mablethorpe, Co-op I think. I mostly prefer a pub car park though (ask first and buy a meal/few beers) never been refused. If I want a free night I just find one of the POIs provided by this fabulous forum in a lay bye or similar. Happy parking everyone!

We stopped at Tesco's Salisbury. No problem, big carpark, 24 hour opening. As said before, arrived late, left early but not before we did a bit of 6am shopping.

You will also be ok on Morrisons at Kendal. Seen loads on there and I know you will be very unlucky to have a problem.

If ever you are travelling on the A39 near Bideford, Devon...there is a car park that I have seen Vans parked on overnight...it's at Atlantic Village/Asda...but use the non paying long stay one to the right as you drive into Atlantic village...Vans park in the top right hand corner away from all other vehicles...Asda closes at 11.00pm and car park attendants go off duty at 4.00pm...so it's quite safe to park in their car park (turn left) if you need to shop for longer than the 2 hours allowed...
