Is it true you have to reverse onto the pentland ferry from Gills bay and if so what is the ramp angle as My van has a big overhang and is very low slung, I catch it on most small Island ferries. Not that it makes much difference reversing or going on forward it would still touch:rolleyes: So why have I posted this thread.......:eek:

thanks for that Merv, looks fine to me.

Merv is it a new boat ? ...I am confused:confused:

I sailed from Scrabster and the boat was an old ice cutter i was told...your pic suggests things have moved on.

That said for those who have never visited Orkney do it !!!!...A beautiful place

Never been to Islay, but would love to go one day. Been to Orkney several times 'cos I have friends that lived on Eday for over 15 years. Have sailed on the ferry from Scrabster and from Gill's Bay. Much prefer the Gill's Bay crossing, but haven't been on their new boat (the Pentalina) yet, but it looks amazing:

May 09, I sailed from Scrabster to Stromness on the "Manavoe" a modern ferry, with good onboard facilitys. I then drove to Kirkwall (40mins) and boarded the Northlink to Rappness, this ferry is really stepping back in time, the facilitys are very basic. But the destinations are worth the travelling, the wild open spaces, the beaches and history, brilliant.
Happy wilding, Nig.

iirc, the Scrabster to Stromness service is operated by Northlink. The ferries between Mainland Orkney and the other islands of Orkney (i.e. the North Isles and the South Isles) are operated by Orkney Ferries. As you say, these boats are more basic but they do the job, even in some very choppy conditions!

Well worth making the journey though, it's an amazing place.
